Angela Davis in Amsterdam: Calls for elevated solidarity with Palestine from Dutch activists 21/05/2018

Last week, De Verrekijker and SRP were fortunate to meet with Professors Davis and Dent to discuss Palestinian solidarity in the Netherlands and repression of organising around this. We discussed the event with Palestinian organiser, Rasmea Odeh and the subsequent eviction of De Verrekijker; the board of directors bowing to pressure from actors external to the university and the general situation of the Palestine solidarity movement here.

Angela Davis in Amsterdam: Calls for elevated solidarity with Palestine from Dutch activists “We in the North who are committed to purging our society of racist violence need to guarantee that the call for justice in Palestine echoes through all of our struggles and that the BDS movement a…

Here we have it peeps! Professor Angela Y. Davis expresses her solidarity to the DV, and so does the audience of her lecture!

"I forward a call upon the board of directors to immediatly return the space of De Verrekijker!"

We thank her and everyone who supported the DV immensly, and now we wait for the university board to answer to this powerful intersectional demand for De Verrekijker to reopen as a symbol of solidarity to global struggles!
In the meantime, you can find us on campus and contact us through email and here on fb, we don't need a physical space to get together and organize!
They thought we were done, but we came back with a big surprise show ;)

You thought that it was it with the previous video?! We have more!!
Here professor Angela Davis herself refers to the importance of supporting Palestinian struggle and points out the connection between Palestinian movement and the Black Lives Matter movement.

"It's important to recognise that the deploiment of the equation between critiques of the Israeli state and antisemitism to harass the development of Palestine solidarity, it is a system very much related to the persistence of anti-black racism here in the Netherlands. The fact that the students were permanently banned to use a free-speech space here on campus after the Palestinina activist Rasmea Odeh spoke, is extremely troubling, especially for those of us who worked tiredlessly with Rasmea and were agaist her deportation!"

"I see Palestine as standing in for global injustices, we do not attempt to generate solidarity to Palestine because we belive that Palestine and nobody else deserve that solidarity. It's the same type of logic that often turns people away from the Black Lives Matter movement, they say

Yesterday we attended the keynote lecture of professor Angela Y. Davis, concluding the weeklong event "Moving Together: Activism, Art and Education".
In the video the curators of the programme sum up what this week has been, and welcome the audience to the VU, again, pointing out some contraddictions of the university..

Top tip: make sure to focus on what they say from minute 2.30 ;)

After two years, eleven months and four days the doors of the space we came to know and love as De Verrekijker have been forced shut.

As a collective we put in countless hours, huge amounts energy and endless love into making a space where true academic ideals such as critical thinking and questioning status quo could take place. We are proud that we could host numerous critical debates and reading groups, that we could give a floor to people that are silenced in other parts of the VU and society, that so many people found a little piece of home on a campus that is otherwise commercialized and businesslike.

Losing an autonomous space like ours is a loss for a collective, but our loud and unapologetic opinions will still be voiced wherever necessary!

Stay strong ✊🔥🖤

The meeting about the situation at the DV has started!

Students, spokepersons from student and worker councils (USR and OR), employees and several interested fellows are discussing the lack of involvment that any of us had in the decision making process about the whole issue and the way the VU board is handling this confrontation.

Strikes Disrupt France as Thousands Protest Macron Overhauls 24/03/2018

Last thursday workers in France launched a massive strike against the social policies of the government, and in solidarity with the student movements which are fighting the selection of admission to Universities, and the proposed cuts to the cultural and educational sectors. Oceanic parades rose in many cities, and on several occasions they clashed with the police.

At the day culminated with the armed eviction of the Law faculty, occupied bu protesting students. Right-wing militia violently evicted students out of the building, while eye-witnesses claim to have seen the faculty dean open the door for them to enter, and the administration applauding their students getting assaulted by thugs. No responsibility was taken by the administration or the dean.

It seems that the tendency of university boards to ignore, and evict their own students who question the administration, reaches beyond this university and even beyond this country.

Our solidarity goes to all student movements around the world that are fighting neo-liberal policies and profit-based budget cuts!

Strikes Disrupt France as Thousands Protest Macron Overhauls Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets across the country as civil servants and railway workers angry with President Emmanuel Macron’s reforms went on strike.

Solidarity with De Verrekijker, autonomous student space at the VU-Amsterdam! 23/03/2018

Today we received more support through a statement of Samidoun, the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network.

"It is critical for people around the world to show their solidarity with De Verrekijker and the student and youth organizers in Amsterdam, under attack for welcoming Palestinian analysis and organizing to a free, anti-racist space. Many of the attacks against De Verrekijker came from around the world, and it is important to provide global support for the students and make it clear to the VU administration that people around the world stand with Palestine and with the student organizers and space of De Verrekijker."

We appreciate all of this support from around the world and from Amsterdam.

Remember to participate to the open discussion on the past, present and future of the DV on Monday the 26th at 13.00!

Today the VU sent us a new letter to communicate us that they only want to discuss behind closed doors about how we are going to leave De Verrekijker empty.
However, we have made clear that we will not leave willingly, and our invitation to have an open discussion on alternative solutions is still open, to them as to everyone else.
We believe that you deserve to know what is going on and have the option of joining the dialogue.
They claim that the VU is only willing to talk about how the eviction will go, but we will show them that the VU is not only the board of directors but every member of this university.

So come and contribute to the open discussion on Monday the 26th at 13!
