When it’s your turn to solo, the room may be noisy, the tempo may be different, and your hands may not feel exactly as they did at home.

That is not the moment to gamble on the hardest phrase you know.

A good opening should be:

easy enough to trust
rhythmical and solid
melodic enough to remember
strong enough to give the rest of the solo confidence
