“It’s in busy, stressful situations that habits can help us, because they just kick in.”

That's what Prof. Dr. Kristin Weber (Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt) told us ahead of the first campaign webinar.

Kristin is clear that knowledge still matters, but knowing a rule doesn't always mean following it. That's where habits come in. In our interview, she shares practical tips on how to start building them, starting with tiny actions that have a consistent, frequent trigger. Think of habits like locking your screen every time you step away from your laptop.

Join Kristin on 10 September for a deeper look at how habits form, how you can support them in your own organisation, and how to break the insecure ones, with examples from everyday life and information security.

Witnessing a historic moment 🛰️

The joint ESA - European Space Agency and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) BepiColombo mission is nearing its final destination, Mercury. And we’re proud and excited to play a part in making it happen.

Together with the German National and Network, DFN, GÉANT connects ESA and JAXA to enable secure and reliable communication for the mission. Data travels from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt via the DFN’s X-WiN network to GÉANT’s peering points in Frankfurt and Hamburg, then across the GÉANT network and Japan’s research and education network SINET to JAXA's Tsukuba Space Centre.

BepiColombo is the first European mission to Mercury, the least explored planet in the inner Solar System. Today, after eight years of travelling together, ESA’s Mercury Transfer Module separates from BepiColombo’s two science orbiters – the first step in one of the most operationally demanding arrival sequences ESA has ever attempted.

But this is just the beginning: in November, ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter will enter orbit around Mercury together. They will separate from each other in December, with science operations beginning in April 2027.

What really happens inside an organisation when a crisis hits? And how well do the different teams work together when the pressure is on?

This autumn, you'll have the opportunity to put that into practice during CLAW 2026. This year, it’s taking place on 23–24 November at Universität Wien, kindly hosted by ACOnet. CLAW combines practical crisis-management training with a hands-on tabletop exercise designed to test that learning under real pressure.

As Zoë Fischer, responsible for CLAW at GÉANT, puts it: " It’s a bit like learning to drive: you can read all the theory around it, but you learn something different when you actually get behind the wheel and have to make decisions in real time."

A few reasons to join:

🔹 It's not just for technical teams. Management, communications and technical participants each practise what's most relevant to their role, while experiencing how those perspectives come together under pressure.

🔹 New this year: our beloved five-minute Lightning Talks, informal slots for sharing real lessons from real crises. No polished presentation required, just a story worth telling.

🔹 You don't need to be "a crisis person." As Zoë puts it: " You may be the person who receives the first call, manages communications, runs a service, supports senior management, talks to users or simply has information that suddenly becomes critical.”

Crisis management is an organisational team sport, and CLAW is the safe place to practise.

CESNET, z.s.p.o. develops technology for time distribution via optical networks ⏱️

The CESNET consortium is developing an infrastructure for the distribution of precise time within the CESNET network. It will include around twenty nodes equipped with White Rabbit technology, originally developed at CERN.

Testing has been done both in laboratory conditions as well as on the live network, confirming sub-nanosecond synchronisation even during a simultaneous operation of high-capacity data services.

Why this matters:

🔹 Precise time is a very important part of our lives. For some sectors like research and energy, accuracy down to a nanosecond is required.

🔹 Satellite navigation systems like GPS can be unreliable at times, so optical fibres can serve as an important alternative to transmit highly precise time and frequency information.

This year, CESNET also joined the White Rabbit Collaboration, the international platform coordinating the technology's future development.

This month, we were in Auckland for , connecting and collaborating with the Asia-Pacific & community.

Hosted by the local REANNZ, the conference opened with a Mihi Whakatau, a traditional Māori welcome including a powerful haka, setting the tone for a week that was ultimately all about connection, community and collaboration. More than 200 experts gathered together to exchange ideas and turn conversations into action.

A few GÉANT highlights from that week:

🔹 Our very own Klaas Wierenga delivered a keynote on building privacy and trust into digital infrastructure from the outset, and exploring how our flagship services like and continue to evolve to meet new identity and access needs.

🔹 We celebrated a renewed peering agreement with a symbolic signing ceremony between GÉANT and CERNET, a further step in strengthening Europe-China academic collaboration

🔹 Discussions on the Asia Pacific Europe Ring (AER) and APOnet reaffirmed the value of the backup arrangements our community has built together, and opened the conversation towards more globally coordinated network resilience.

🔹 Asi@Connect marked an important milestone with the first round of governance meetings for the new phase of the EU co-funded project.

👏 A special thank you to REANNZ and the entire APAN community for the warm welcome and great conversations.

We’re honoured to contribute and collaborate with this inspiring global community, working together across borders to support research and education.

Tomorrow, our CEO Lise Fuhr will be joining the panel on digital sovereignty at RNP Forum 2026!

She’ll be joined by Luis Eliecer Cadenas Marin (RedCLARA), Jennifer An (CERNET), and hosted by Lisandro Granville (RNP). Together, they’ll explore how different regions balance digital sovereignty with global collaboration, and the role play in infrastructure, data, and AI.

Ahead of the panel, Lise spoke with the team at RNP to discuss exactly this balance. As she puts it: “We have thrived thanks to strong global collaboration, but we cannot ignore the growing demands for digital sovereignty and strategic autonomy. These two dimensions can coexist, provided there is a balance.”

Do you always check a link in an e-mail before you click on it?
Or lock your screen when leaving your desk?

These are habits, and just like brushing your teeth before bed, they can be learned.

But how do you actually form habits? And as someone who works in , how can you help build secure habits within your organisation?

Prof. Dr. Kristin Weber will answer these questions in the first webinar of this year's campaign. As a human factor expert in information security, she’ll share psychological insights into how habits work and how they’re formed, using examples from both our everyday lives and the information security field.

Why is SIG Public Affairs important for the GÉANT community right now?

The policy landscape for European has shifted from the periphery to the centre of the operations. Between evolving digital infrastructure strategies, AI regulation and complex funding cycles, the rules of the game are moving fast, often with NRENs navigating it alone.

That's exactly the gap our newly established SIG on Public Affairs and Policy (SIG-PA) was created to fill.

We spoke to Agnieszka Stokłosa (Poznańskie Centrum Superkomputerowo-Sieciowe PCSS) and Leonie Schäfer (DFN), Chairs and Strategic Coordinators of SIG-PA, following its first meeting.

Here are just a few takeaways from the interview:

🔹 Digital sovereignty is a cornerstone of the group's agenda, helping NRENs articulate their role as Europe's trusted infrastructure more effectively to policymakers

🔹 For smaller NRENs without dedicated public affairs teams, SIG-PA can act as an early warning system for policy trends

🔹 The group is tackling shared, high-stakes challenges together, from protecting funding streams to ensuring NRENs are recognised as critical infrastructure

As Agnieszka and Leonie put it: "If NRENs engage more effectively with the policy environment, individually and collectively, the likely result is a more stable and better-resourced community over the long term."

New GÉANT-CERNET interconnection agreement strengthens Europe-China academic collaboration 🌍 🌏

At in Auckland yesterday, GÉANT and CERNET (China Education and Research Network) celebrated a renewed peering agreement with a symbolic signing ceremony attended by Klaas Wierenga, our Chief Services Officer, and Zhonghui Li, CERNET's Operations Manager.

The new 100 Gbps peering at GÉANT's Point of Presence (PoP) in Frankfurt marks a tenfold increase in interconnection capacity. As part of the upgrade, CERNET has deployed its own terrestrial connectivity from Beijing into Frankfurt, replacing the previous jointly provisioned arrangement.

The upgrade responds to growing demand for high-performance connectivity between European and Chinese higher education and research institutions, including Transnational Education (TNE) initiatives. And it reflects both organisations' shared commitment to supporting global & .
