Jake & Brita are both USHMM Museum Teacher Fellows from the 2017 cohort when I was still at the Museum facilitating the program. Brita also joined our 2023 Power of Place® European Summer Institute for Holocaust Educators trip. They are incredibly special people!! Jake Kienzle was diagnosed with Stage III re**al cancer in July 2026 at age 36. His current treatment plan with the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo includes six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy followed by four additional months of chemotherapy. Jake has been married to his wife Brita for 10 years. Together, they have a young daughter, Lena, who is set to begin kindergarten this fall.

The new MN Statute that JCRC advocated for in 2024 goes into effect this school year, and JCRC is offering a free, new professional development course ideal for MN educators preparing for this mandate, while benefiting teachers in any state.

Through concise chronological study of the Holocaust paired with sound instructional practice across 9 online sessions, this course offers a comprehensive, evidence‑based approach to teaching one of history’s most challenging subjects. Teachers will leave with a a full unit of classroom‑ready materials.

Across two weeks and three countries, our Power of Place® participants walked in the footsteps of young writers whose diaries survived the Holocaust; guided in part by Alexandra Zapruder & her book, Salvaged Pages. In the landscapes where their stories unfolded, we confronted absence, witnessed memory, and deepened our understanding of what this history asks of educators today. I am grateful to the Jewish Community Relations Council: Minnesota and the Dakotas for their partnership & ongoing commitment to this important program that we offer together each year with a new itinerary.
