Book launch: Joy and Fear on 24 November 2023 19:30 - 21:00 at Het Nieuwe Instituut

Theo Deutinger presents his latest book, Joy and Fear – An Illustrated Report on Modernity, a sequel to social scientist and visual language pioneer Otto Neurath’s 1939 book Modern Man in the Making, which anticipated today’s infographics. He will discuss his intentions in making the book and the course of modernity since Neurath’s work, while flipping through the pages together with the audience. Deutinger also goes into conversation with publisher and graphic designer Lars Müller. The conversation is moderated by architect San Dino Arcilla.

We are happy to announce the release of Joy and Fear. An Illustrated Report on Modernity

When published in 1939, the visual language in Otto Neurath's “Modern Man in the Making” revolutionized the way complex data was presented to a broad audience.

"Joy and Fear. An Illustrated Report on Modernity" is an ingenious continuation of the info-design classic. Through pictograms, based on Neurath's ISOTYPE, illustrations and accompanying texts, the book analyzes developments of global issues ranging from agriculture to the welfare state over the past 80 years. It questions how modernity, through its promises and failures, continues to reshape mankind, and brings clarity to today's modern world.

The updated version of the Handbook of Tyranny has just been published. We had to add eight more pages, mainly to accommodate the new wall and fence structures that have been built in the last five years.
Many thanks to Lars Müller Publishers and our great team (Pia Prantl, Christopher Clarkson and Haoge Gan).

The Chapel - finished two days ago - was designed and built by The Department (Pia Prantl, Christopher Clarkson, Theo Deutinger) with the help of Marlene Deutinger and Andreas Zißler.

The Chapel is open to all faiths and thus serves as a place for everyone to reflect. 100 wooden planks create a semi-transparent curtain, a space to sit, pray, meditate, or talk. Upon entering, visitors are withdrawn for a moment from the grown nature and surrounded by a constructed nature.
