English at work is not only something people read or write.

It is spoken every day, in meetings, interviews, onboarding sessions, project updates and conversations between international teams.

That is why speaking skills matter. They influence how people explain ideas, ask questions, build trust and collaborate in real time.

But spoken English is not always easy to assess accurately. According to ETS, in France, the biggest gap between importance and assessment performance concerns speaking skills.

For organisations, this makes reliable language assessment a practical issue. It helps identify communication needs more clearly and support people where it matters most.

How should companies better assess spoken English at work?

An accent can shape how a message is received.
But it should never be confused with expertise.

In international workplaces, English helps teams connect across countries, cultures and backgrounds. Yet research shows that non-native English accents can still influence how much attention and engagement a speaker receives.

This is not about speaking “perfect” English.
It is about recognising the value behind every voice, every idea, and every contribution.

Because in global teams, what matters most is not how someone sounds , but what they bring to the conversation.

How do you think workplaces can better recognise ideas beyond accents?

Language diversity reveals how flexible human thinking can be.

Each language offers its own way of describing time, space, relationships, emotions, and experience. By learning another language, we do more than acquire new words. We discover new ways to understand the world.

Language learning opens our minds to different perspectives and reminds us that there is never only one way to think, communicate, or connect.

Learning a second language may do more than help us communicate.

Recent research suggests that multilingual people can show younger-looking brain patterns, with the effect appearing stronger depending on the number of languages spoken and the depth of language experience.

It is a reminder that language learning is not only about words, grammar, or fluency. It also keeps the brain active, flexible, and engaged over time.

Another reason to keep learning, practising, and opening new doors through language.

3 in 4 employers say the rise of remote work elevates the importance of English language proficiency.

When your team is spread across the globe, a shared language isn't a bonus — it's a baseline.
