We’re excited to launch Technology in Environmental and Social Systems (TIESS) - a new event series exploring the complex role of technology in shaping both our environments and our societies. This initiative is a collaboration between , , and , bringing together diverse perspectives to critically engage with technological developments and their interactions with environmental and social systems.

Our first event, taking place next Thursday (16 April), will be an expert talk on the broader impacts of generative AI. While AI is often framed as a tool for efficiency and innovation, this session invites us to step back and ask more critical questions: What are the ecological and psychological consequences of its widespread use? Where do responsibilities lie - with individuals, or within larger systems? And what happens when students and employees feel increasing pressure to use AI tools to keep up?

16 April
15:30 - 16:30
VU Green Office (De Boelelaan 1105, VU main building, HG KC-18)

To explore these questions, we are delighted to welcome Lisa Doeland, ecophilosopher and postdoctoral researcher at . In her figuring the ecological crisis she draws on uncanny modes of thinking such as deconstructive thought, psychoanalysis and critical theory.

Join us as we open up a space for reflection, discussion, and critical engagement with the systems shaping our technological future.
