Did you know 550,000 households in the Netherlands spend more than 8% of their income on energy?
New research conducted by MIT senseable City Lab in collaboration with AMS Institute reveals how energy coaching and smart technology can provide practical solutions to combat energy poverty.
๐ก Simple measures like radiator foil, draught strips, water-saving showerheads, and real-time energy feedback displays helped households cut electricity use by 33%, gas by 42%, and bills by an average of โฌ104 per month.
๐ก Energy coaches provided personalized advice, empowering families to adopt energy-efficient habits and take control of their energy consumption.
โThis research is valuable for the municipality. It provides insights for better energy poverty policies and has directly helped reduce residents' energy bills,โ says Annoesjka Nienhuis, Programme Manager for Innovation and Sustainability at City of Amsterdam.
The result? Three-quarters of participating households moved out of energy povertyโshowing how targeted interventions can make a real difference.

๐ Geofencing technology is transforming future mobility management in cities. In the Smart Urban Mobility Blog #4, our colleagues Marco Rinaldi, Tom Kuipers and Petar Koljensic are explaining how!
By exchanging position information through GPS, vehicles can be made aware of these virtual borders and the consequences of crossing them, making it a powerful tool for defining ad-hoc policies that respond to the immediate needs of the city. ๐

Did you know that 80.000 bikes get stolen yearly, just in ? ๐ฒ This outcome made our researchers curious... Where do these bikes go? How do they move? ๐ค
That's when they came up with the idea to place 100 locked GPS-traceable in Amsterdam to uncover where stolen bikes end up and how they move.
โAmsterdam's narrow streets and nearly impeccable cycling infrastructure create its world-famous cycling culture. However, the abundance of bicycles makes stealing bikes a lucrative sport. Our goal is to uncover where stolen bikes end up.โ โ says Titus Venverloo, Research Fellow at AMS Institute and MIT Senseable City Lab
