At BabyLab Amsterdam, we are currently investigating infant habituation and what factors can affect this learning process.

But, what is habituation, and why does it matter?

🐣 Calling all parents in Amsterdam! Want to take part in a fun and easy science study with your baby?

Join our Babylab study at the University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam! Your little one (5-12 months) will watch engaging visuals while a small sticker on their forehead tracks eye movements — all in just 10-15 minutes. You’ll be with them the whole time!

Do Babies have kneecaps ☀️?
A myth is circulating the internet: Babies are born without kneecaps.
Although this is incorrect—as we all had kneecaps from day one—the confusion is justifiable. Babies are born with kneecaps made almost entirely out of cartilage. This cartilage only starts turning into bone between the ages of 2-6 years. Until then, the kneecaps have a soft and squishy consistency, creating the illusion of absence. While beneficial for the birthing process, the flexible cartilage also helps babies perform daily activities such as crawling and taking their first steps. 🌞🍼🧸.

Hebben baby’s knieschijven🌼?

Er circuleert een mythe op het internet: Baby’s worden geboren zonder knieschijven.
Hoewel dit onjuist is—iedereen heeft vanaf dag één knieschijven—is de verwarring begrijpelijk. Baby’s worden geboren met knieschijven die volledig uit kraakbeen bestaan. Dit kraakbeen begint pas tussen de leeftijd van 2 en 6 jaar in bot te veranderen. Tot die tijd hebben de knieschijven een zachte en verende structuur, wat de illusie kan wekken dat ze ontbreken. Dit flexibele kraakbeen is niet alleen voordelig tijdens de geboorte, maar helpt baby’s ook bij dagelijkse activiteiten zoals kruipen en hun eerste stapjes zetten.
