In this closing reflection, Eryk Salvaggio discusses control, creativity, and generative AI. He argues that treating AI as a tool to organise thought or “fill” the blank page shifts power away from human imagination and toward algorithmic averages. Salvaggio calls on artists to remain messy, to act as noise within systems designed to reduce complexity, and to protect unstructured thinking as a vital space for creativity.

In this clip, explores how generative AI images begin from noise. What looks like a corrupted file is actually the starting point for image generation: systems process vast datasets, map probabilities, and gradually resolve noise into recognisable visuals. But repeat the same prompts, and patterns emerge. What looks like a creative act often reveals narrow biases and central tendencies baked into the training data. 💻

Generative AI is trained on what’s deemed “normal.” But what about everything in between? In this talk, Soyun Park discusses a workshop where students collected and labelled their own data to explore bias, subjectivity, and the unseen, from low-resolution images to shadows and leftovers, questioning how AI decides what counts. 🐈‍⬛

Soyun Park introduces The Unflattering Dataset of Machine Learning — a workshop she developed and delivered at Design Academy Eindhoven and ArtEZ University of the Arts.
Inspired by Atlas of AI by Kate Crawford, the workshop examines the politics behind AI datasets, focusing on ImageNet and its use of WordNet taxonomies to classify people and images.

Referencing ImageNet Roulette by Crawford and Trevor Paglen, she highlights how biased labels shaped how machines “see” us — and asks: who gets to define identity in the age of AI? 🕹️

Round 2: Speculative Sound Worlds 🎛️
We ran this workshop IRL with in September and it was such a success we brought it back for an online rerun—tech hiccups and all 🛸

Participants dove into Nicole’s reverse-engineering approach: starting with emotion and narrative first, then learning tools like Neutone Morpho (AI audio morphing), Google Magenta (generative MIDI), Instrument Playground, and ElevenLabs. We made underwater textures, bodega cat rave soundscapes, and ambient spiral patterns.

This event is part of Open Culture Tech 2.0 - making immersive technology more accessible to artists. As part of the OCT program, AIxDESIGN & Thunderboom are hosting a series of online and offline events and experimental creative workshops around Immersive Tech and Gen AI for music artists.
