Open Call: Rent the SALWA Space for One Year!

Dear SALWA community,

We are excited to announce an opportunity for individuals or collectives to rent our precious SALWA space for one year, located in Amsterdam West.

Historical Background:
The space is part of the Kostwononnen building, purchased by the Kostgangers Association in 2005 to provide various cultural functions. The building houses a theatre, and numerous studio spaces with architects, artists and social entrepreneurs as well 7 residences where people live and work.
The building also has a communal roof terrace that overlooks the Kostverlorenvaart and there is a beautiful garden along the entire length of the building.

Requirements:
- Rent: 800 amount per month, including internet, heating and cleaning fees.
- Duration: One year (August 2024 - August 2025)
- Volunteer Hours: A specified amount of 4 hours per month volunteer work is required to help maintain the building
- Events: We will host a number of Salwa events in the space (about per year), which will be communicated ahead upon agreement
- opportunity to see the space on Thursday 11 July 17:00-19:00

We are looking for:
- Community-minded individuals or collectives
- Clean and organised
- Interested in volunteer work
- willing to help host Salwa events 4 times a year

SALWA opens its space on the 29th of November, The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People - a significant day for those who value justice, equality, and freedom from oppression. Join us during the day starting 15:00 for some warm coffee, tea and some snacks before the program starts at 17:00. Afterwards we join together for some soup before heading towards the demonstration in Amsterdam Centraal.

About the artists and program:

The derelict by Mohamed el Deep
Mohamed el Deep is an Egyptian performer and dancer based in Amsterdam. El-Deep has extensive experience in genres such as physical theater and contemporary dance. Currently, he is interested in researching different social themes and searching for new ways to present himself as an artist.

A dirty American dream by Wael Kadlo
Wael Kadlo is a Syrian actor and documentary filmmaker. He is now studying a master’s program with UVA in visual anthropology.

Readings for literary texts by Palestinian writers written under the Israeli bombardment of Gaza
The literary Arabic text will be followed by the English translation. The Arabic text will be recited by Jana Assaad, and the English will be recited by TBA. Those texts are gathered, translated and distributed by; Raseef22 – Al-Manassa – Action for Hope – س

As international news outlets, world leaders, and major social media platforms are engaging in censorship and distorting the narrative, all while perpetuating the dehumanization of Palestinians and their enduring suffering, we extend our channels in support of “Palestine Cinema Days” Festival, forcibly canceled.

On the somber anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, observed on November 2nd, and in an effort to amplify Palestinian voices, we are screening The Tale of the Three Jewels directed by Michel Khleifi at 8:00 p.m. at Derde Kostverlorenkade 35-D, 1054 TS Amsterdam.

The screening is free of charge. However, there is a limited capacity so please RSVP beforehand on the link in our bio.

Dear SALWA Community,

Join us this Sunday at our West studio for a delightful gathering featuring coffee, soup, and drinks. Our doors will be open from 11:00 to 19:00.

Explore the vibrant world of KOSTEGWONNEN(which tenalates into English to cheap living 💶), where our talented neighbours will be showcasing their studios. Three decades ago, this building was squatted and subsequently legalized by artists. The aim was to provide affordable and accessible studios for fellow artists in Amsterdam who faced the challenge of exorbitant rents in the bustling city 🥲.

We look forward to welcoming you to our creative space and sharing the rich history behind KOSTEGWONNEN.

We have been cooking this event to welcome autumn with warm face and some art and music!

The works will show some of the artistic process of the KLAB artists, which is aimed to explore the relationship between sound and design.

Our exhibition is a showcase of works in progress and audacious experiments that pay homage to the collective KLAB sound and design practice. Prepare to be amazed by the incredible talent on display.

We will have a live performance from 19:00 - 19:30.

Thank you everyone for joining SALWA’S gathering during the opening of SALWA’s Internet café: Here, there but they don’t want us anywhere at W139! 💕You have one more week to check the exhibition! 🙈

We had so much fun with you all while listening, talking, eating, drinking, laughing, and dancing together! It was an evening we will not forget!✨

A huge thank you to all our amazing artists in residence Chen Yu Wang , Geo Barcan , Hala Alsadi , and Sixin Zeng who blessed us with their amazing work exploring questions that revolve around the internet as a space, whether it’s virtual, physical, or conceptual.💗

SALWA’s Internet Café: Exploring the Intersection of Community, Migration and the Internet.

The event will include interventions and live interviews in collaboration with INC's The Void. We will gather around for a performance, and after the final drinks, we will move together to Bario ( Bilderdijkstraat 186, 1053 LD Amsterdam, Netherlands ) for amazingly curated live acts by and GarageNoise ☄️ !!!

The event is part of our Internet Café Gatherings and exhibition program, and will take place at W139.

Tickets for the Gathering are €5 sold at the door (Bario event sold separately, link in bio)
