Anarchism at the IISG! In September, we are organising two events focusing on this ideology. On 15 October, we are hosting a lecture on Nestor Makhno - a celebrated and feared rebel - who sought to create a society based on anarchist principles in southern Ukraine.

On 24 October, the video installation United Anarchist Archives will open. This installation is the result of a journey through various European archives holding material relating to a group of Swiss anarchist watchmakers around the 1870s. During the opening, the artists and historians will talk about these watchmakers, their ideals and their work, while placing them in an international perspective.

Nestor Makhno (1888-1934) has been called a revolutionary anarchist, a peasant rebel, the Ukrainian Robin Hood and a mass-murderer. During the revolution and civil war that followed the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, Makhno emerged as the leader of one of the largest popular rebellions. He and his supporters attempted to defend southern Ukraine's independence and wanted to create a new society based on anarchist principles.

In his lecture, Sean Patterson will tell about Nestor Makhno’s remarkable life. Furthermore, he addresses the changing ways in which Makhno and his movement have been remembered, also in the context of Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine. IISG-colleague Gijs Kessler will be the discussant during this lecture. Op 29 oktober 2026 organiseert het Centrum voor de Geschiedenis van Migranten zijn
jaarlijkse studiedag in Amsterdam. Het thema luidt: ‘Migratieonderzoekers en het
publieke debat’.

Wij zijn op zoek naar presentaties over diverse onderwerpen die te maken hebben met
het thema van de studiedag. Daarnaast bieden wij ook ruimte voor posterpresentaties.

Groeten vanaf de Historicidagen in Leiden! Waar onze collega's Lucas Poy en Astrid Verburg deelnamen aan sessies over het gebruik van AI. Wat zijn de ethische en praktische consequenties hiervan voor ons vakgebied? Maar helemaal analoog maken we ook weer buttons met mooie afbeeldingen uit collectie. Werk! We zoeken twee Collectiemedewerkers die gaan werken aan het ontsluiten van een groot organisatiearchief op het gebied van de Nederlandse LHBTI+ geschiedenis. Dit gebeurt in nauwe samenwerking met IHLIA LGBTI Heritage.

Je ordent en beschrijft het archief zodat het uiteindelijk voor iedereen toegankelijk wordt. Je werkt samen met collega’s van de afdeling Collectieverwerking, maar ook met onderzoekers die gebruik willen maken van het archief.

Tomorrow: screening of Slaves of the Empire.

Slaves of the Empire unfolds against the backdrop of colonial-era Fort Kochi, a picturesque town in Kerala, India. This evocative film delves deep into the ordinary existence of a dhobi community, laundry workers who were enslaved by the Dutch during the colonial era.

After the screening, filmmaker Rajesh James and IISH researcher Britt van Duijvenvoorde will present new research. Using digital search tools developed at the IISH, they uncovered archival evidence that supports the community's long-held history of (forced) migration from Tamil Nadu to Kerala, offering new insights into Dutch colonialism.

Wat doe je als je het niet eens bent met je arbeidsomstandigheden? Dan richt je een vakbond op. Dat deden de zussen Betje en Sophie Lazarus in 1896, een bijzondere actie voor vrouwen in de negentiende eeuw.

De zussen waren roosjessnijders, een beroep binnen de diamantbewerking waarbij diamanten hun kenmerkende roosjesvorm te krijgen. In vergelijking met andere beroepsgroepen binnen de diamantindustrie verdienden de roosjessnijders - vaak thuiswerkende vrouwen - weinig.

De Roosjes Snijdsters en Snijders Vereeniging (RSSV) streed daarom voor een minimumtarief dat voor zowel mannen als vrouwen zou gaan gelden. Het was de eerste jaren een moeizame strijd en de vrouwen ervaarden weinig steun vanuit de Algemeene Nederlandsche Diamantbewerkersbond (ANDB).

Maar de inspanningen van de zussen wierpen in 1900, vier jaar na de oprichting, hun vruchten af; een gezamenlijke staking zorgde ervoor dat werkgevers eindelijk het minimumtarief aanvaarden. De vereniging was succesvol uitgegroeid naar 450 leden, ongeveer de helft van de alle Amsterdamse roosjessnijdsters.

Join us for a screening of Slaves of the Empire by filmmaker Rajesh James, followed by a discussion on new archival research.

Set in Fort Kochi, Kerala, the documentary tells the story of the dhobi community, whose ancestors were enslaved during Dutch colonial rule. After the screening, Rajesh James and IISH researcher Britt van Duijvenvoorde will discuss how newly searchable VOC archives help uncover this community's history.
