IEA Education

IEA Education IEA is an international cooperative working to research, understand, and improve education worldwide.

The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) is an international cooperative of national research institutions, governmental research agencies, scholars, and analysts working together to research, understand, and improve education worldwide. We conduct high-quality, large-scale comparative studies of education across the globe in order to provide educators, policymakers, and parents with insights into how students perform.

🌏 Your research can help us understand change and advance education.

What can IEA data tell us about education in a rapidly changing world?

From the opportunities and challenges of AI in education to changes in student achievement, well being, teaching, learning and educational policy we want to hear from researchers using IEA data to explore these questions and more.

The 12th IEA International Research Conference (IEA IRC) is coming to Bangkok, Thailand, 23–25 June 2027, bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world under the theme: Understanding Change, Advancing Education

📣 Now is your opportunity to share your research.

We invite proposals for: Papers, Symposia & Posters

Whether you're working with PIRLS, TIMSS, ICCS, ICILS, LaNA, or other IEA data, your research can contribute to conversations about where education is heading and how evidence can help shape its future. 📅 Proposal deadline: 15 November 2026

Have research to share? We want to hear from you.

🗣️ 'There was a concern that civic education cannot prepare students... that inequalities are too big for civic education to to make a difference. This is why ICCS was set up, and research from that moment has shown us that civic education can indeed make a difference. I'm happy to say that ICCS was part of building this evidence base'

🔎 What is ICCS? Why does civic education matter? And why is it important to measure student attitudes towards civics and citizenship?

➡️ Maria Magdalena Isac, ICCS International Study Director, joined Emiliano Bosio on his Global Citizenship Education Interview Series for a great conversation about IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, and civic education at large.

🤝 This week saw the 5th NRC meeting for TIMSS 2027 take place in Brussels.

National Research Coordinators from all over the world came together to discuss results from the field test and begin preparations for the main study data collection coming next year.

👏 Thank you to all our National Research Coordinators for their active participation. Whether it is engaging on matters relating to context questionnaires, data processing, translations and national adaptions, or otherwise, the collaboration between researchers, colleagues and friends from such a diverse range of education systems is inspiring, and is what makes IEA studies possible. Until next time!

🧭 Gendered Learning Motivation in Global Perspective: Findings Based on LaNA, PIRLS, and TIMSS

Released just last week, the new IEA Compass Brief considers the issue of gender and motivation across education systems at different income levels.: https://www.iea.nl/publications/series-journals/iea-compass-briefs-education-series/august-2026-gendered-learning-motivation

🔎 New evidence from IEA’s LaNA, TIMSS, and PIRLS shows that girls and boys often experience learning differently, even when they achieve the same results.

🚨 New TIMSS Insights report out now: 'Student Absenteeism and Academic Achievement: Evidence from the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Study'

🔎 Drawing on the unique dataset of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Study, the report explores patterns of student-reported absences across Grades 4 and 5 in 2023 and 2024. It examines the extent to which absences across the two years are associated with mathematics and science achievement in Grade 5, after accounting for students’ prior achievement in Grade 4 and other contextual factors.

👏 We extend our warm congratulations to our colleagues at the Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE) on reaching the milestone of their 50th anniversary!

We are proud of our partnership and look forward to developing dialogue between educational research, policy, and teacher education together into the future.

📕 Earlier this year, Volume 18 of IEA's Research for Education series (Educating Pupils for Environmental Sustainability in Europe) was released at the ATEE winter conference in Braga, Portugal: https://www.iea.nl/publications/series-journals/iea-research-education/educating-pupils-environmental-sustainability

We wish everyone at ATEE the very best as they celebrate this great achievement at the ATEE Annual Conference at Białystok University, Poland this week.
