🩸 We need iron to produce hemoglobin in blood which carries oxygen around our body. This is needed for proper functioning of our immune system, good brain activity and proper energy level balance.
⛓ There are two types of 'haem' and 'non-haem'. Haem iron can be absorbed easily by our body and can only be found in animal sources like- meat, fish, chicken and eggs. Non-haem iron is poorly absorbed by our body. The richest in non-haem iron are tofu, dark green vegetables, beans and peas.
🍊 Vitamin C increases iron absorption, so if you are on a plant based diet and want to improve your non haem iron absorption take your iron rich foods togetger with vitamin C rich foods and drinks.
☕ Tea and decrease iron absorption, so its best to spread intake of those among meals for optimal iron metabolism.
🔗 Iron is one of the most commonly deficient nutrients. Overconsumption is very rare. So no need to worry about eating too much iron.
