Between 2021 and 2025, KIT Institute worked with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) as a partner in both the A3SEED programme in South Sudan and the HortiNigeria programme in Nigeria.
Despite operating in different contexts, both programmes prioritised gender and youth inclusion. Yet across agricultural value chains, women and young people often face barriers to leadership, entrepreneurship, and market participation.
To address this, the programmes developed context-specific training programmes on:
🔸 Inclusive leadership
🔸 Entrepreneurship and marketing skills
🔸 Gender sensitisation
🔸 Youth engagement approaches
While tailored to each sector, these trainings shared common principles aimed at enabling women and young people to participate more equitably and benefit from sector growth.
In this Learning Brief, IFDC Inclusion officers Bukola Funsho-Sanni (Nigeria), Nancy Kayokaya (South Sudan) and KIT Senior Gender Advisor Sandra Quintero bring together insights from both programmes, showing how cross-programme learning can strengthen inclusive agribusiness approaches across contexts.

In fragile countries, aid, development and peacekeeping needs are too often addressed separately. At KIT Institute, we believe that it is necessary to work at the Humanitarian–Development–Peace (HDP) Nexus, so that emergency relief doesn't just address the immediate crisis, but builds the foundations for lasting prosperity.
Senior Economist and Advisor Francesconi Nicola shares in his latest blog what five years of the A3SEED programme have taught us about South Sudan's transition from seed aid distribution to seed market development, in the presence of recurrent conflicts.

Fleur volgde bij ons destijds de Netherlands Course on Global Health and Tropical Medicine (NTC).
