Gerrit Rietveld Academie

Gerrit Rietveld Academie The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a university of applied sciences for Fine Arts and Design.

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie aims to support talented young people in such a way that they can operate independently in the field of visual arts or design. We want to enable them to sustain their work on their own and become sources of artistic inspiration in their area of specialisation.

EIGHT CUBIC METERS

Opening on 21 August: Eight Cubic Meters by Claudia Sanchez: A bow is a bow es un lazo.

How do objects acquire meaning? Are they shaped by function, ritual, labour, desire, or by the cultural narratives we repeatedly attach to them? Can we consciously re-signify a signifier?

Taking the bow as its point of departure, this project considers how an ordinary object becomes loaded with meaning and gender connotations. Before becoming a feminine ornament adorning hair and clothing, it existed as a practical knot: a utilitarian form used to fasten, secure and hold. Yet over time, this simple gesture became culturally charged with ideas of beauty, delicacy, innocence, obedience and femininity.

Exhibition from 21 August until 17 September
🎈Finissage: Thursday 17 September, 17.30h

EXPO

If you're hanging out in the parks of Amsterdam this summer, you can come across some art canvases created by Rietveld students!

As part of the drawing class in the Graphic Design department, students explored Vondelpark and collected observations and elements that appealed to them – plants, people, signs, sculptures, traces, architecture, and objects. These observations (photos, drawings, frottages) were transfered manually into multiple collages using acetone transfer technique on paper and other materials. The banners display selected fragments, details and scenes from this process.

You can find the canvases in Vondelpark, Sarphatipark, Martin Luther Kingpark, and the Schinkeleilanden 🌳

PREPARATORY COURSE - EXTENTED DEADLINE 13 AUGUST

These 3 graduates all started as preparatory students and there are still some spots left for the upcoming programme!

The Preparatory Course offers an intensive 25-week programme for young makers looking to develop their artistic practice and portfolio before applying to the academy, or for those who are curious about what studying at the Rietveld would be like.

Participants work on a wide range of assignments in art and design during three to four half-day classes each week. Throughout the course, you develop your portfolio and experiment with different approaches that can help you prepare for admission to the Basicyear – the first year of the Bachelor programme.

📌 Open to applicants aged 17–25
📌 Application deadline: 13 August 2026

CONGRATS

The fourth edition of the Amstelveense Kunstprijs van de Raad has been awarded to artist Isabel Heatley for her graduation project, 'The Enwinded Body'.

Members of the Adviescommissie Beeldende Kunst (ABK) and the manager of the municipal studio buildings visited the participating artists during the Graduation Show. According to the judges, Isabel Heatley stood out for the strength of her artistic vision, her compelling presentation and her ambition to forge links between art and society. They see her as an artist with great potential for development and expect that a residency in Amstelveen will make a valuable contribution to the further development of her practice.

As the winner of the Kunstprijs van de Raad, Isabel Heatley will have access to a studio in Ateliergebouw A24 at Amsterdamseweg 24 in Amstelveen for one year, starting in the autumn of 2026.

RIETVELD REVIEW(ED)

Rietveld Review(ed) is part of the public programme of the Rietveld Academie’s Graduation Show. We are happy to now present the sixth edition.

An independent external committee was asked to reflect on the 2026 Graduation Show as a whole and to identify current tendencies and themes within the exhibition. The committee was also asked to consider the presentations of the various departments, selecting a number of projects by graduates that exemplify their observations. A broad range of topics was discussed in the meetings, and the Rietveld Academie has included a selection of these reflections and observations in a reflection report.

This year’s independent external committee, consisted of Abdo Zin Eldin, Amy Suo Wu and Maia Kenney.

👀 The report is available online via the link in bio or you can grab your free printed copy of the report at the entrances of the three buildings.
