STUDIO FOR IMMEDIATE SPACES

In between the logic of constructing architecture and the design of objects, we experiment and explore the immediate space. The Studio for Immediate Spaces is a place for understanding and defining specific s

paces that we live in, we work, eat, socialize, discuss, or perform in. To explore and expand the field of the interior as a specialized focus on space that has a direct relation to their users, we include any space as a possible place. For us they are in- and outside. They are here and on the moon. They exist in our minds and are physically around us. Our practice is to define our gestures out of which we construct the spaces we inhabit, and to see space as a circumstance to let something happen. COURSE

This two-year master course is set up around four practice-based studios, each led by a practitioner in the field of architecture, design or fine arts. A studio revolves around a topic, which for the current year are the Autobiographical Construction, Let’s Dance - from Studio to Situation, Material Gesture and the graduation studio. Participants will develop and understand through these four studios their own intuitions, the tangible aspects of their work, the context they relate to and the environments they make. Next to the studios, a theory programme provides a space for reflection on the practice, while experimenting with theory as a practice in its own right. One that encompasses writing and critical thinking. Besides regular seminars and individual tutorials, the theory program comprises a series of talks by invited speakers, the Monday Evening Talks, as well as the two day-long Roundtable Discussions, both of which are open to the public. Additionally guests from different disciplines and nationalities are invited for up to a week during the weekly program. The general rule for these visits is that there is no rule. Start somewhere. Then walk.
Recently, empty squares and overspilling parks have made us painfully aware of how core to an urban society the possibility of coming together is. WALKS is a parcours initiated by the graduating students of the Studio for Immediate Spaces in reaction to the current situation, as possibilities of interacting in public space have been restricted and altered. The shown works confront this new reality and offer possible approaches to re-think the structural undercurrents defining the relationship between public and private spaces in the contemporary city. Conceived as a walk to be taken alone or with a partner in accordance to prevailing social distancing regulations, the contributions are arranged in a loose and associative network around Amsterdam’s Bos en Lommer area.

Let’s spread the word, not the virus. Due to the current circumstances with corona virus and the concerns that we share, we decided to cancel the public event and minimise the gathering on Saturday March 14th in Athens. Our project with the students consists of the valorisation of an empty plot of land to create a spontaneous public space and of several public interventions along the street of Kritis as a physical proposition for the local community. The infrastructures we produce aim to exist for longer term in the neighbourhood. We will launch the project on Saturday as planned in the public space but won’t organise any public event nor gathering. We will share a map indicating the location of all interventions. If you happen to be around in the near future or in case you are interested to see the project later, you will find our work in the street.
On Saturday March 14th, we will be along Kritis street close to our infrastructures in the street from 5pm until 7pm to answer questions or initiate discussion with the local community. In the past week, we cleaned a plot of land, planted indigenous plants, installed infrastructures of care such as seatings, furniture to squeeze oranges as well as an elevated platform. We hope to make a small gesture that can perdure in the public space and initiate a discussion about Athens’ urban landscape.

Λόγω των τρεχουσών συνθηκών με τον κορωνοιό και τις ανησυχίες που μοιραζόμαστε, αποφασίσαμε να ακυρώσουμε τη δημόσια εκδήλωση και να ελαχιστοποιήσουμε τη συγκέντρωση το Σάββατο 14 Μαρτίου στην Αθήνα. Τα έργα των μαθητών αποτελουνται από την αξιοποίηση ενός άδειου οικοπέδου για τη δημιουργία ενός αυθόρμητου δημόσιου χώρου και πολλών δημόσιων παρεμβάσεων κατά μήκος του δρόμου της Κρήτης ως μια φυσική πρόταση για την τοπική κοινότητα. Οι δομές που παράγουμε θα υπάρχουν μακροπρόθεσμα στη γειτονιά. Θα ξεκινήσουμε την εκδήλωση το Σάββατο όπως σχεδιάσαμε στο δημόσιο χώρο αλλά δεν θα διοργανώσουμε καμία συγκέντρωση. Αν βρίσκεστε κοντά ή σε περίπτωση που σας ενδιαφέρει να δείτε τα έργα αργότερα, θα τα βρείτε στην όδο Κρήτης.
Το Σάββατο 14 Μαρτίου, θα είμαστε στην οδό Κρήτης 40 από τις 17:00 έως τις 19:00 για να απαντήσουμε στις ερωτήσεις σας και να συζητήσουμε με την τοπική κοινότητα και τους γείτονες. Την περασμένη εβδομάδα, καθαρίσαμε ένα οικόπεδο, φυτεύσαμε εγχώρια φυτά, εγκαταστήσαμε υποδομές φροντίδας όπως καθίσματα, έπιπλα για να συμπιεστούν τα πορτοκάλια καθώς και μια ανυψωμένη πλατφόρμα και μπαλκόνι. Ελπίζουμε να κάνουμε μια μικρή χειρονομία που μπορεί να μείνει στον δημόσιο χώρο και να ξεκινήσει μια συζήτηση για το αστικό τοπίο της Αθήνας.

During upcoming Het weekend event at De School, come relax and re-energize in the care space 'Welcome to GEL' signed by Fabulous Future, alumni collective from Studio for Immediate Spaces / Sandberg Instituut. Installation open non-stop, performance Saturday 08.12 from 1am to 3am and Sunday 09.10 from 5pm to 7pm.
