Infectious diseases remain a major global health challenge, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) carrying the heaviest burden. In his dissertation, Jelle Feddema explores how global innovation systems can be made more equitable and better equipped to respond to infectious disease outbreaks. Using a multi-method, case-based approach, he identifies systemic barriers that continue to hinder effective and fair outbreak responses, particularly in LMICs.
His work highlights the importance of building innovation systems that are not only faster and more coordinated, but also more inclusive, so that future outbreak preparedness and response better reflect the needs of the countries and populations most affected.
