Hoi!👋👋 My name is Kristina Ayers and I am the 2025-2026 Fulbright/NAF Heersink Family Foundation Fellowship in Global Health grantee! I live in the southern tip of the Netherlands in Maastricht and am conducting a mixed-methods research project on the intersection between socioeconomic status, pancreatic cancer resection, and perceived barriers to surgical clinical trial entry. San Diego and the surrounding area is really nice to explore. Some must-see places include Old Town and the USS Midway, both a blast to the past. Old Town has some of the best Margaritas, and a lot of character to go with it. The Midway is a maze of corridors, providing a great peak into how it must've been to stay on such a huge ship.

Vegas is quite close, and I couldn't resist having a visit. The flashing lights, general buzz and fanfare are truly something else! Unfortunately, I managed to gamble away all of my Fulbright money, so I'm living off dry bread and water these last weeks...

Shout-out to Nico de Jong, fellow Fulbrighter, who just arrived in San Diego (last picture). Good to see a familiar face!

Of course, work is not all there is in life! Lots of fun to be had, together with my lab buddies. Went to the Miramar air show, with impressive stunts by some beautiful planes. If you ever get the chance to watch something like this, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Pieter Dorrestein, the PI, took me on a gorgeous mountainbike trip! The views here are amazing, and very unlike the flat landscape in the Netherlands. On the video you'll see me battle uphill, Pieter didn't make it easy on me...

Lastly for this post, I had the good fortune to be here in the USA during Halloween to do some pumpkin carving. I think I may just be a natural at this 🎃

The days here at Dorrestein lab are varied, which is something I thoroughly enjoy. One day, I may be working at the wet lab, prepping samples for mass spectrometry (the impressive looking machine in picture 2). Other days, we'll go to conferences downtown or work extensively on data analysis.

This lab is one of the most innovative places for mass spectrometry tools, perfectly suited for studying microbial communities (and more) in the samples we collected at the UMCG.

In addition, my fellow lab members have been super helpful and welcoming, as you'll see in the next post 😁

Hi all! My name is Toon Scheurink, and I am a PhD student from the University Medical Center Groningen. Currently, I am a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego at the lab of Pieter Dorrestein, working on untargeted metabolomics. I'll be taking over the Fulbright instagram today, showing what you can do during a Fulbright grant!

✨🏃‍♀️ Congratulations to Leah Chen for conquering the Amsterdam Marathon yesterday! 🇳🇱🇺🇸🎉 Leah is currently studying on her Fulbright grant at the VU Amsterdam, and being an avid runner, completing the Amsterdam Marathon was a big goal for this year. In fact, when she applied for her US Fulbright graduate student grant last year she already mentioned that she would participate in this marathon if selected, and she did exactly that on Saturday. Well done, Leah!

✨🏃‍♀️ Wij zijn trots op onze US Fulbright student Leah Chen, die gisteren de Marathon van Amsterdam voltooide! 🇳🇱 🇺🇸🎉 Leah studeert momenteel met een Fulbright-beurs aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en als fervent hardloopster was het voltooien van de marathon een groot doel voor dit jaar. Toen ze vorig jaar haar aanvraag indiende voor een Fulbright-beurs voor Amerikaanse masterstudenten, gaf ze al aan dat ze aan deze marathon zou deelnemen als ze werd geselecteerd, en dat heeft ze zaterdag ook gedaan. Gefeliciteerd Leah!

Onze Amerikaanse Fulbright studenten gingen afgelopen weekend op excursie naar Amsterdam. Fulbright Nederland alumna Iris Plessius verzorgde voor hen een rondleiding van het Paleis op de Dam en de highlights van het Rijksmuseum. Een prachtig programma waarin onze Fulbrighters veel geleerd hebben over de Nederlandse geschiedenis en cultuur.

Last weekend our American Fulbright students went on an excursion to Amsterdam. Fulbright Netherlands alumna Iris Plessius gave them a tour of the Royal Palace on Dam Square and showed them the highlights of the Rijksmuseum. It was a wonderful program in which our Fulbrighters learned a lot about Dutch history and culture.
