How likely is it that the Netherlands will actually win the World Cup? 🇳🇱🏆

Sven Karbach, Assistant Professor of Data-Driven Mathematical Modeling and Computing in Finance, uses Monte Carlo simulations to estimate World Cup winning probabilities. Based on existing performance indicators—such as player strength, market odds, ELO ratings, and squad market values—he constructs a comprehensive strength index for each team.

Using this index, a simulation model plays the entire tournament tens of thousands of times.
Result: The Netherlands end up with a 2.4% chance of winning the World Cup Or: in 10.000 simulations, the Netherlands became champion 240 (!) times.

Meet Yosr, a 3rd-year Business Administration student at the UvA. When she started her studies in 2022, she chose not to move to Amsterdam. Instead, she commutes every day from her home in a town nearby Amsterdam to the campus by train and other public transport.
