Our Story

Lleca Teatro is an independent Nicaraguan theater group. We make theatre in unconventional spaces with unconventional groups, working first and foremost through our bodies. Lately, we have discovered that we mostly make theatre from spaces of resistance, where the effects of power inequalities become tangible. We have made theatre in and from prison, with prisoners and former prisoners (2009-2017) and in and from the barricades of Nicaragua鈥檚 protests, with students and autoconvocados (2018-present).

In 2012 we also founded the itinerant Centre for Experimental Acting (CAE), an interdisciplinary stage/platform/workshop of theatre, (a)e(s)th(et)ics, and anthropology.

With our prison theatre project we also attempted to better the conditions inside prison (by writing funding proposals for sanitation and educational spaces inside prison), and campaigned for the destigmatization of (former) prisoners by widely touring a prison theatre play.
