The annual consultation is an important moment for employees to have a conversation with their manager about the mutual functioning and matters such as career prospects, personal development, work pressure and social safety. The Works Council therefore wholeheartedly supports the Faculty's principle that all employees have at least one such meeting every year. At the same time, we note that many employees did not have an annual consultation in 2021, which we have discussed with the Board.

In early February the Works Council's P&O Committee issued a short questionnaire for OBP employees. The aim was, and is, to gain more insight into the workload experienced by the support and management staff (OBP) of our faculty. The Works Council again calls on all OBP employees to complete the questionnaire. You can participate in the survey until Friday, 18 March.

Today from 5-7pm, UvAโs European Studies and Russian & Slavic Studies programmes, student organisations Machiavelli, SES, Kleio and Radost, and the research schools ASCA, ARTES, ASH and AISSR, together with the inter-faculty ACES research centre, bring together a transdisciplinary panel of experts for a Q&A session to answer questions of students about the war in Ukraine. The event is meant to facilitate knowledge exchange, but also to offer a space to come together and jointly consider these deeply upsetting events.
Speakers are historian Alexander Etkind (European University Institute Florence), political scientist Olga Burlyuk, Eastern Europe experts Michael Kemper and Christian Noack, media anthropologist Johana Kotiลกovรก, and cultural historian and Slavist Ellen Rutten. Pola Cebulak from UvA's European Studies will moderate the event. We as ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ณ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ are also in full support of this initiative and providing technical assistance to the event.
The event is open to all students and employees, and will take place in hybrid form: you can either join us in Oudemanhuispoort D1.08 or sign up for the livestream. If you want to attend, please register via https://student.uva.nl/humanities/forms/studentensites/fgw/geesteswetenschappen/en/war-at-our-door.html. If you want to attend online, you will receive a link to the Zoom meeting this afternoon.

In the newsletter of two weeks ago, the report Perspective and certainty was presented, a report by the faculty exploratory committee on the HR policy for lecturers (D). Dean Fred Weerman also paid attention to the report in his vlog. We as Works Council have of course taken note of the report with great interest and are completely satisfied with this apparent change in HR policy for lecturers. We did, however, express some additional comments and critical questions in a letter of advice. In the appendix to our letter we have also added various personal stories that have come to us through our own inventory of problems surrounding the appointments in the D position.

Not only the academic staff (WP) but also the support and management staff (OBP) experience a high workload at the UvA. While various initiatives are currently underway to identify the bottlenecks for the academic staff, we as OR also find it important to gain more insight into the work pressure experienced by the OBP. For this reason, the HR committee of the Works Council has now also developed a short questionnaire for OBP employees.

After the UvA Works Council elections were held in April 2021, the transfer from the old to the new OR FGw took place at the end of the previous academic year. Several staff members continued their membership, such as chairman Gerwin van der Pol (also again chairman of the COR), while several new members took a seat in the Works Council as well. After the summer break, the work of the new OR started concretely. In the first six months, we have already issued various recommendations and achieved various results. We would like to report briefly on the most important advice and results to date.

The Faculty already reported on this last week, but we as Works Council would like to once again draw attention to the opening of the temporary provision aftercare social safety. From now on, both (former) students and (former) employees are able to submit a request for aftercare related to a situation of social insecurity they experienced in the past (until seven years ago). After continuous efforts to establish a suitable aftercare scheme, the Works Council is pleased that the provision has been established and that it is possible to submit requests.

The OR FGw wishes you a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. After another intense COVID-19 year, which changed the way we work and teach, possibly forever, the well-deserved Christmas break is hopefully a period to relax and take some time off. We as Works Council have achieved quite some results in 2021 and are looking forward to continue our efforts in 2022. We will update you about this in the New Year. For now, stay healthy and enjoy this festive time of year despite the lockdown!
