Just as our political and social leaders reflect we the people, so do our spiritual leaders. The spiritual and religious leaders of a war-like culture will justify and encourage war, or they will simply be marginalized and ignored in favor of those who will...
Similarly, the spiritual leaders and teachers of a herding culture (like ours) will justify and enable the exploitation of nonhuman animals for food and products, and they will be rewarded for this by being respected, affluent, and successful, and those who directly challenge animal exploitation will be ignored and marginalized. And yet, there always seems to be a few who resonate with these generally ignored prophetic voices crying in the wilderness, and through such as these, cultures and individuals can evolve in a positive direction...
The momentum in this direction seems to be increasing daily, and given the urgency of our cultural, health, economic, and ecological predicament, bringing the vegan teachings of radical inclusion, respect, and lovingkindness into our religious institutions is a number one priority. If existing traditions are unwilling or unable to embrace and promote the vital spiritual teaching that veganism offers everyone, of all persuasions, then we’ll create new spiritual movements and traditions that do, and we see this happening as well.

Why Are Few Spiritual Teachers Vegan?
“How can being vegan be so important when so many spiritual leaders eat meat and dairy?” On some level, we’ve all had to confront this thorny question. We naturally respect and often emulate those whom we perceive as more spiritually aware than we are, and so for Christians, for example, the f...

Amid all the confusion surrounding -19, what everybody does seem to understand, without a doubt, is that older people are most vulnerable. It’s a scary world once you hit 60. Novel viruses can breakout at any moment and you are, by default, part of the high risk demographic. And worse, from the constant dialogue presented by the media and health authorities, we are led to believe that this increased vulnerability is inevitable. But is this true?
In this article I will present a different and more empowering perspective that, unfortunately, isn’t often emphasized by the many leaders and experts that are appearing in the media these days. From politicians to physicians, virologists to infectious disease specialists, one of the key elements that defines our current crisis seems too taboo for any of them to even mention. In fact, it could even land them in trouble- especially in the court of public opinion. Well, here it is anyway: Your vulnerability is far from being inevitable and, when it comes to the immune system, scientists have indeed discovered the fountain of youth.

Your microbiome is most likely shaped by the people, animals and even plants and soil you encounter, as well as the antibiotics you take and your own genetics, among other factors, and all these influences are hard to control. But we can control what we feed our microbes — what we eat.
We would do well to give them as much soluble fiber as possible, preferably in real food like nuts, legumes and vegetables. And we can add these concerns about thickeners, sweeteners and emulsifiers to our list of reasons to limit our consumption of processed foods.
Opinion | The Germs That Love Diet Soda
Human beings aren’t designed to eat processed foods like these.

End of Summer, end of last decade, an ex-cyclist in my Spinning class mentioned a tough new race across Europe for charity, and how fun it would be to attempt it. I was like ‘Okay, let’s do it, why not’. It was less than 2 months away, and I’d never done any road racing or serious climbing, nor did I own a racing bike.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Tour route was a 1300 km, 15,000 vertical km, 8-day race over the Alps starting in Pontechianale, ending in Valkenburg.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We got a couple of other guys to join our team (they eventually dropped out due to injury), raised over 10,000 euros for Doctors Without Borders just before the closing deadline, I bought a bike, and a few weeks before the race was to start we went out on the road in Holland looking for some hills to practice on. I still had everything to learn about riding in a group on the road, and had to put in quite some effort to keep up with my tall Dutch team-mates.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On the 1st day of the Tour we rode up the Col Agnel literally into the clouds, and racing down without being able to see even a few feet ahead of me was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done. 🚴🏻♀️
In the days following we cycled all the big ones…Col d'Izoard, Col du Lautaret, Alp d’Huez, averaging 8 hours a day, through temperature extremes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had a tough time, since without much preparation, or specific training, I developed a very sore knee, and, 5 days in, my gears malfunctioned from a fall, leaving me stuck on the big chainring. By the time we reached France the weather had turned stormy, and I crossed the old 1st World War killing fields with rain and tears rolling down my cheeks.
Nevertheless, I rode every inch of the route and never got into the van carrying our gear.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On the last day I was focussed on getting to the finishing line 1st, and powered through the Belgium/Dutch border on my heavy gear without any breaks, so our tiny team had the satisfaction sitting on the road in the sunshine, eating our last currant buns as if it was nothing, as the 2nd team raced up in a cloud of dust. So cool 🙂
There’s something in me that has always leant heavily on externally-imposed tests and limits, as though I was born without an inner meter to know what is possible, what is enough. And it’s as if things only come into focus when they are last-minute. If somebody came up and said ‘Hey, we’re climbing Everest next week, would you like to join’, I would probably say yes. I’ve been working on listening inside though, and there is no better training-ground than sports and fitness. I think getting into Yoga has also helped me with that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I haven’t taken my bike out again much since. Holland has not got much in the way of inspiring countryside, and I was never that much into road-cycling to start with. I would quite like to cycle some interesting routes again in the future, though perhaps not in the form of a race, so I could have time to look around at the scenery.
