I’ve been using an approach that has really helped me a lot when I struggled with learning a language.

We often set ourselves a rigid plan to follow and that is a good safeguard against the inevitably vanishing motivation.

But blindly following a plan is not always a great idea, because our needs change throughout our language learning journey.
At times we need to work on our comprehension skills, at times on writing, at other times on speaking.

It is thus important to develop the skill of listening to our instincts, to what they tell us we need in order to make the next step.

I did this a lot when learning Japanese. I did not complete every textbook or course I started, because at some point I noticed how the additional benefits became too small and I needed to work on another area of the language.

Reading a lot is very helpful when learning German, because when you read you can take the time to understand words, while when you listen to a conversation, it's often too fast.

The key is to find interesting articles and texts to read at your level, otherwise the texts will be boring or too difficult and you'll lose motivation.

Finding such texts can be challenging, and that's why we've created LinguaMerse: so you can keep reading articles that interest you and that have the perfect level of difficulty for your level.

🇩🇪 German is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn. But here's a surprising statistic: 96 of the 100 most common English words are actually Germanic, i.e. they're often very similar to German. That means English speakers already know more German vocabulary than they think.

In my experience, focusing on learning German grammar keeps people from realising the many ways in which German is surprisingly similar to English, and often much simpler and logical than English, French or Spanish, since it uses more native German and fewer Greek words, which makes it easier to learn new words.
