In the latest issue of Language Magazine, researchers discussed findings from a recent study that indicates that dogs can differentiate between languages. "During their lives with humans, dogs pick up on the auditory regularities of the language they are exposed to,” says study co-author Hernández-Pérez.
“This study showed for the first time that a nonhuman brain can distinguish between two languages,” says Attila Andics, senior author of the study. “It is exciting, because it reveals that the capacity to learn about the regularities of a language is not uniquely human."

Bravo to the Scottish government on their new policy under which primary school students will learn English plus TWO other languages by the time they finish their middle years program!
Dr. Colin Christie of the University of Aberdeen stated that this “is a positive step in introducing primary learners to the joys of learning languages. The wider benefits of language learning include an openness and awareness of other cultures, an increased confidence in communication, a development of cognitive abilities, an improved understanding of one’s own language, and a broader international perspective.”
