See the World, Learn Together 🌍

Shuwen, one of WLSA’s exchange students, shares with us her experience at Maru-a-Pula school in Botswana, detailing the unique differences within the country’s culture, educational norms and way of life. She focuses on the beauty she finds learning within a slower rhythm of life—detaching herself from her phone and forming friendships instead, engaging socially at the school, internalising “technology fasting” as naturally as breathing. Shuwen likes that the people she met value real-world interactions over screen time; she reflects that the omnipresence of digital content negatively impacts our concentration levels and our capacity for deeper thought.

Beyond spending valuable time in the classroom, she immerses herself in Botswana’s culture, participating in community service. A particularly profound moment occurs during a shopping trip with her host family; Shuwen’s inclination to rush and hurry combats the seemingly unhurried approach of her hosts, leading her to appreciate the cultural difference in pace.

Shuwen’s experiences lead her to appreciate the profound impact of human connection, silence, and deep conversations. From philosophical debates under the stars to observing the structure of ant nests with her hands, she finds meaning in moments free from technological distractions. Leaving Botswana, she carries with her a newfound perspective on the importance of slowing down, of embracing life with presence and curiosity—and how such a tranquility can still be achieved in the fast pace of the digital age.

🌍✨ WLSA’s COP 29 ACTION WEEK concluded with an inspiring LIVE ONLINE EVENT on Sunday, December 8th!
Students from our associate schools across the USA, UK, China, India, Canada, Korea, and South Africa joined together for a lively and impactful session. They delved deep into climate justice and climate nationalism, critically examining the outcomes of COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

A standout moment was the climate negotiation roleplays, where delegates represented different countries, fostering a clear consensus on the need for transformative solutions and international cooperation. Students emphasized that while global efforts are crucial, local action is vital and their generation must have a strong voice in shaping the future.

💬 Student Voices:

• "Hearing different opinions and then managing to reach common ground, even if we started with varying views, was really powerful."

• “Cooperation and willingness to be part of the solution is everything. That’s the real takeaway.”

• “We don’t just want to tell young people, ‘This is all terrible’; we also want to show the positive things being done and ways to be involved."

👏 A huge thank you to all the committed students and educators who made this event a success! Together, we're driving change for a sustainable future. 🌱
