Google Translate can help you communicate. But can it help you connect?

This summer, my husband and I spent three weeks in Umbria. Our elderly Italian host spoke no English, and we spoke no Italian.

So Google Translate became our interpreter.

Very useful for practical things — but not always very accurate. 😄
When I asked for new light bulbs, Google translated our host’s reply into Dutch as:
“Ik ga nu even het monster halen.”
(I’m going downstairs to get the monster. 👹)
I only wanted a light bulb! 💡😂

We laughed a lot, but I also realised how difficult it is to have a real conversation through an app.

Our host had a fascinating background in fashion, and I would have loved to hear more about her life and experiences.
Being able to communicate is not the same as being able to connect.

Learning Dutch isn’t just about vocabulary and grammar. It’s about having real conversations, connecting with people and feeling more at home in the Netherlands.

🗓 In September, I’m starting new A1 & A2 Dutch group courses and A2+ conversation classes.

Want to feel more confident connecting in Dutch? Send me a message.👇

AL or PAS — what’s the difference?

These two little Dutch words can be confusing because there isn’t always one perfect English translation.

The trick is to think about time. ⏰

⏪ When the time is behind you:
AL → the period feels LONG
PAS → the period feels SHORT

⏩ When the time is ahead of you:
AL → EARLIER than expected
PAS → LATER than expected

Here are the English translations of the examples in the carousel:

Ik woon al twintig jaar in Rotterdam.
I’ve been living in Rotterdam for twenty years already.

Hij is al achttien.
He’s already eighteen.

De bus komt al over vijf minuten!
The bus is coming in just five minutes!

Ben je nu al klaar?
Are you ready already?

Hij woont pas een maand in Nederland.
He has only been living in the Netherlands for a month.

Hij is pas zestien jaar.
He’s only sixteen.

De film begint pas om 22:00 uur.
The film doesn’t start until 10 p.m.

De trein vertrekt pas over een uur.
The train doesn’t leave for another hour.

💡 Remember: AL and PAS don’t just tell us about time — they also tell us how the speaker sees that time.

Want to practise Dutch like this and become more confident using it in real life?

New A1 & A2 courses + conversation classes start in September!

Should your Dutch teacher speak ONLY Dutch?

Not necessarily—especially when you're a complete beginner.

I use English when it helps make grammar clearer and prevents unnecessary confusion and frustration
