🌊 How do you move a machine learning application from development toward reliable use in practice? That challenge was at the heart of Aditya Dhinavahi’s EngD final project at JADS: OceanGuard: Taking the MLOps Route to Production.

Aditya carried out his project within MARIT-D, a European collaboration focused on the fight against maritime trafficking. MARIT-D developed a data-driven tool to monitor unusual shipping movements and help law enforcement agencies identify suspicious activity.

Within this context, Aditya explored the MLOps route toward bringing a machine learning application into an operational environment.

This week, he successfully presented the results of his work and completed an important milestone in his EngD journey.

Congratulations, Aditya! 🎓

📅 Donderdag 10 september

A good pitch can help an AI startup turn an idea into a conversation with the right people.

Applications for the AI Pitch Competition 2026 are now open. The competition, organized by Erasmus Enterprise, Brabant Development Agency (BOM) and IO+, brings AI entrepreneurs together with investors, companies and industry experts.

Selected participants can develop their pitch through the LEVEL UP AI Track on 28 September and a Pitch Workshop at Willem II Stadion on 27 October. The Grand Finale takes place during AI Summit Brainport on 12 November, with prizes ranging from €10,000 to €50,000.

For founders, it is an opportunity to sharpen their story, receive feedback and meet people who can help them take the next step.

Know an AI startup that should hear about this? Share the opportunity with them. https://aipitchcompetition.softr.app/

The new academic year is underway at JADS.

Our first-year Master’s students started with the Statistics Bootcamp: an intensive week to refresh and strengthen their statistical knowledge. It helps students begin the program with a shared foundation, so they are ready to work with more advanced data science and AI topics during the semester.

Statistics soon gave way to spaghetti, tape, rubber bands and marshmallows. Yesterday’s challenge: build the tallest possible tower with these materials.

The winning team, Eline, Mark, Joeke, Diego and Adolfo, reached 135 cm. That is 5.46% higher than the previous measured tower and 55.17% higher than the result in 2023. A result worth measuring twice.

Welcome to JADS, to all our new students. We hope the coming months bring plenty of opportunities to learn, meet new people and explore where data science and AI can take you.

🔐 How do you turn software risk into something an organization can actually assess and act on?

That question is at the heart of Prakash Baburaj's EngD project with Tidal Control: Quantifying Software Risk: A multilayered approach.

Today, August 27, Prakash presents his final work at JADS. His project explores software risk across multiple layers, connecting a technical challenge with the broader need to manage security and compliance.

His presentation also concludes our three-day run of EngD finals this week. From manufacturing to elderly care and software risk, each project started with a very different real-world challenge.

Great final presentation, Prakash!

❤️ Preventing falls in elderly care is about more than technology. It is about giving caregivers useful information at the moment they need it.

Today, August 26, EngD trainee Francesco Romeo presents his final project with Momo Medical - NL, focused on fall prevention in elderly care facilities.

Momo Medical's technology provides caregivers with insight into residents' activity around the bed. Francesco's project explores how data can support this environment and contribute to safer care.

His final presentation brings two years of EngD learning and applied work to a close. Congratulations on reaching this milestone, Francesco!

🏭 How can process mining and machine learning help optimize control panel manufacturing?

That is the challenge EngD trainee Mohamed Zahid worked on together with Hoppenbrouwers. Today, August 25, he presents the results in his EngD final presentation at JADS.

Mohamed designed an optimization framework that uses data to better understand and improve the manufacturing process. It is a practical example of what happens when advanced data science methods meet a concrete challenge from industry.

The final presentation marks the conclusion of Mohamed's two-year EngD journey. Congrats Mohamed!

If you thought Introduction Week had started early, these students are a little ahead of schedule. About ten years, to be precise. 😉

This morning, 21 children aged 9 to 12 visited the JADS campus as part of the AI Summer School for Kids.

They trained their own AI model, explored the campus during a scavenger hunt and discussed a question that is relevant far beyond the classroom: what should AI be allowed to do, and who gets to decide?

A lively morning full of curiosity, good questions and some very young faces on campus.

The AI Summer School for Kids is organized by Ctac, in collaboration with JADS and Microsoft Nederland.

Building an AI startup takes more than developing the technology. Turning an idea or proof of concept into a viable company also means finding the right people, learning from critical feedback and explaining clearly where your solution creates value.

Applications for the AI Pitch Competition 2026 are now open.

The program gives AI founders in Brabant several opportunities to develop their startup:

🔹 September 28: connect with founders, investors and partners at LEVEL UP 2026
🔹 October 27: sharpen your pitch during a hands-on workshop
🔹 November 12: present your startup during the Grand Finale at AI Summit Brainport

Finalists compete for cash prizes ranging from €10,000 to €50,000.

Interested in taking part? Applications close on Friday, September 4.
