Presumir competencia depende del contexto y el apoyo... para todos!
El contexto y el apoyo aseguran la comprensión.
¿Qué significa eso? Significa que nos aseguramos de que estamos usando la comunicación multimodal en las interacciones. Significa que damos tiempo para procesarlo. Significa que proporcionamos aclaraciones de formas fáciles de procesar, si es necesario.
Prácticamente, significa que proporcionamos entornos ricos en lenguajes para el desarrollo de habilidades de andamios (por ejemplo, hablar, escribir, modelar AAC robusto), al tiempo que ajustamos la complejidad de nuestro lenguaje hablado cuando sea necesario (por ejemplo, durante períodos de disregulación o cuando las demandas de procesamiento superan el ancho de banda de una persona).
Significa que usamos objetos para proporcionar referentes concretos cuando presentamos información basada en palabras a personas que son comunicadores no verbales.
Significa que aseguramos el acceso y el uso de los métodos de comunicación preferidos de una persona.
Significa que usamos capas multimodales de apoyo de comunicación que contabilizan las habilidades dinámicas de una persona, habilidades que fluctúan dependiendo de los factores ambientales y el estado regulatorio.
Cuando presumimos competencia Y aseguramos la comprensión... la persona podrá acceder a la información y actuar sobre ella, ya que se presentará de formas accesibles y accesibles que dan cuenta del contexto.
Presume competence depends on context and support… for everyone!
Context and support ensure understanding.
What does that mean? It means we make sure that we are using multimodal communication in interactions. It means we give time for processing. It means we provide clarification in easy-to-process ways, if needed.
Practically, it means we provide language rich environments to scaffold skill development (e.g., speaking, writing, modeling robust AAC), while also adjusting the complexity of our spoken language when needed (e.g., during periods of dysregulation or when processing demands exceed a person’s bandwidth).
It means we use objects to provide concrete referents when presenting word-based information to individuals who are nonverbal communicators.
It means, we ensure access to and use a person’s preferred communication methods.
It means we use multimodal layers of communication support accounting for a person’s dynamic abilities, abilities that fluctuate depending on environmental factors and regulatory state.
When we presume competence AND ensure comprehension … the person will be able to access and act on information, because it will be presented in supportive and accessible ways that account for context.

People still judge someone's capacity to think, feel, and communicate based on their body and how it moves. Unfortunately, this happens too often. Support AAC users to engage with others on an equal level through social media.
