PARENTS BE VIGILANT, THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

Our children would be vacating soon, for the long holidays.
As exciting as it sounds, this is no time for parents to relax their guard. PARENTS KEEP WATCH OVER YOUR CHILDREN!
As you make that arrangement for summer camps, summer classes, keeping them with nannies, relatives or caregivers also put measures in place to prevent them from falling prey to sexual predators. Frightening right?

What can you do?
1) It is not too late to start teaching your child about personal boundaries, the NO NO areas on their bodies.
2) Don't be too complacent or trusting. Always call in to check up on your kids. Also try not to have a particular home coming or pick up schedule.
3) Don't just be a parent,be a friend to your children, you need them to trust you absolutely. Always listen to them and observe ;if they exhibit any form of fear or discomfort towards anyone, investigate!
4) Develop a secret code with your child. Children love to feel trusted with a secret.
Tell them, the code is a secret just for you,the code should be used only when he or she feels threatened or when their private boundaries have been trespassed upon.
5) Never leave them unattended to. Teach them to be keepers of each other and always tell you their observation. Don't shut them down.
We wish all our kids a wonderful and safe holidays.

A CASE OF TEENAGE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM.
"A recent tragic incident occurred at Olasore international School, Iloko-Ijesha, Osun State when a child committed su***de by hanging!
The school management rose from this traumatic experience by organizing a very well attended seminar yesterday on Mental Wellness of young adults ( Teenagers). I
attended and felt parents and guardians could learn a few lessons from the discussions. Below is a post I initially sent to another group chat. God bless.
“This contribution was sent in by Gbayode Somuyiwa , a top Media/PR personality , Lawyer, and former Executive Director in charge of Human Resources and Corporate Communications at THISDAY.
'Good morning all. Thank you Ayo for the good works on this platform. I know you’re trying to protect the name of the school and our dear friends who are the proprietors because of the likely embarrassment that may arise from the tragic event. Thankfully, the consensus of participants at a well attended seminar held yesterday at the Lagos Business School was that the public should know and create awareness about Mental Wellness of our children particularly the teenagers to save parents and school authorities the agony of this type of sad incident.

One of the revelations that came out of the conversation yesterday was that parents and school management should come out of DENIAL when signs of emotional issues that could affect the mental wellness of our children are noticed.

A live case was discussed when a participant sought help about a year 7 student who wrote a su***de note because she felt unloved by her parents, yet the parents were not aware that their child is so depressed that she wants to kill herself.

Another shocking revelation is that teenagers who want to end their lives DO NOT write su***de notes in diaries anymore! They now post it on their Facebook or Instagram walls or Twitter. The Director of Mental Awareness Nigeria Initiative (MANI), an NGO run by young Nigerians disclosed that 5,000 su***des were prevented this year alone because MANI monitored the posts on social media and intervened.

AWARENESS about mental health and the STEREOTYPES associated with mentally challenged individuals should be addressed.

Disturbing statistics were given about teenage su***des in Nigeria. But because of stereotypes “ what will people say”; “aye o gbodo gbo”; “our reputation will be destroyed “. Many parents who should have sought help, keep quiet and do not attend to the early signs.

The economic situation and rat race to keep up is not helping matters. Style of parenting too should be regularly reviewed.

The child who committed su***de was not from a poor home. What that child lacked could have been PARENTAL LOVE. It could also have been inability to cope with PEER PRESSURE. Another problem teenagers face is BULLYING in school and LOW SELF ESTEEM.

It was the resolution of all those present at the meeting yesterday that schools should have POLICIES on what can enhance the mental wellness of their students. PARTNERSHIP between parents and the school was emphasized.

Now back to your question as to what should be the response of a school owner faced with similar unfortunate situation.

From all I heard from the insightful discussions from experts on the subject, the following are my recommendations:
1. Own up to the challenge
2. Contact the parents of the victim immediately
3. Create awareness among other parents
4. Invite professionals such as counselors, child psychologist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrists and life coaches to talk to both Parents Teachers Association (PTAs) and students.
5. Educate teachers ( they know the children more than the parents) about mental wellness
6. Reduce pressure on teenagers regarding academic success. Let children explore their talents and parents should encourage and give support.
7. Know your child’s friends and be a parent to them too. Teenagers don’t talk to their parents about their issues but would rather talk to their friends.

Finally, by organizing a life- saving seminar to create awareness about mental wellness (balanced lifestyle) of teenagers, I don’t think the affected school is ashamed or embarrassed that a student under its care committed su***de. Interested individuals can read up a summary of the proceedings on the website of OLASHORE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL when it is uploaded as promised by the school principal.

Parents and guardians, please look out for unusual changes in your child or wards.

This conversation is more IMPORTANT than the celebrity gossips, please share and create awareness about MENTAL WELLNESS of young adults.

May we not bury our children. "
