**FUE Zaria Mourns Death of Part-Time Student*

The Federal University of Education, Zaria, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Hafsat Abubakar (EZPP/22/BIIN/066), a part-time student of the Department of Biology/Integrated Sciences, NCE IV.

Hafsat passed away on 18 August 2026 and was buried according to Islamic rites at Anguwan Alkali, near the residence of the Galadiman Zazzau.

In a condolence message, the Director of Part-Time Programmes, Prof. Abdurrahman Mahmud, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, and the entire University community, extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues, classmates and loved ones.

The University prayed Almighty Allah to forgive her shortcomings, grant her eternal rest and admit her into Jannatul Firdaus.

The Management also prayed Allah to grant the family and all those affected by the loss the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

FUE Zaria Hosts National Conference on Food Security and Economic Development

...... Association Calls for Stronger Agricultural Partnerships to Tackle Food Insecurity and Unemployment

The Department of Adult Education and Continuing Education, Federal University of Education, Zaria (FUE Zaria), in collaboration with the Association for Sustainable Development and Community Integration of Nigeria, has organised the 2026 Annual National Conference, focusing on food security, employment, insecurity and economic development.

The conference was held at the Dr. Suleiman Balarabe Chamber, FUE Zaria, and brought together academics, policymakers, development practitioners and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical approaches to addressing food insecurity, unemployment and challenges confronting agricultural development in Nigeria.

The conference was themed “Food Security, Employment, Insecurity and Economic Downturn.”

In her welcome address, the Dean, Specialised Education, Prof. Halima Audi, described the theme as timely and relevant to the socio-economic challenges confronting the country.

Prof. Audi commended the Association for Sustainable Development and Community Integration of Nigeria for choosing FUE Zaria to host the conference, describing it as an important platform for scholars and stakeholders to exchange ideas on sustainable solutions to food insecurity and unemployment.

She urged participants to actively engage in the presentations and discussions and translate the knowledge gained into practical initiatives within their communities, particularly in the area of sustainable agricultural development.

Also speaking, the President of the Association for Sustainable Development and Community Integration of Nigeria, Prof. Idris Sa’id, emphasised the importance of food security to human development, noting that hunger could undermine education, productivity and community development.

He said Nigerians had demonstrated resilience, creativity and determination in sustaining agricultural activities despite the numerous challenges confronting the sector.

The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Halliru Umar, Director, Continuing Education, FUE Zaria, commended the organisers for bringing together relevant stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting food security, employment and sustainable development.

Representing the Royal Father of the Day, the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, the Madakin Gonan Zazzau, Hon. Ibrahim A. Musa Bamalli, expressed appreciation to the association for choosing Kaduna State and Zaria as the venue for the conference.

Hon. Bamalli assured the organisers of the Emirate's continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting meaningful and sustainable development.

He identified insecurity, high cost of agricultural inputs, rising production and harvesting costs, as well as climate change, among the major challenges affecting Nigerian farmers.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian National Council for Adult Education said the Association for Sustainable Development and Community Integration of Nigeria had been in existence for more than 14 years and had contributed to women empowerment, employment creation, child development and community advancement.

He commended FUE Zaria for hosting the conference at a significant period in the institution's transition from a college to a university, noting that the development would further strengthen its contribution to national economic and human capital development.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics Prof. Suleiman Balarabe, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, welcomed participants to FUE Zaria.

Prof. Balarabe commended the association for selecting FUE Zaria among other universities to host the conference and urged participants to use the opportunity to exchange knowledge, establish partnerships and develop practical solutions to food insecurity and unemployment.

In his keynote presentation, the Managing Director of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency (KADA), Alhaji Muhammad Rilwan, described food security as a central to pillar of economic development.

He said the Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, was making deliberate efforts to connect farmers with viable markets, strengthen livelihoods and improve agricultural productivity.

According to him, agriculture has significant potential to generate employment and improve incomes when adequately supported, secured and integrated into broader economic development strategies.

He further stressed the importance of partnerships among government agencies, international organisations, educational institutions and communities in promoting economic self-reliance and integrating agriculture into adult education.

Presenting the lead paper, Prof. Muhammad Bello Sh*ttu described food security as a community development issue, stressing that a healthy and prosperous society is built on food-secure communities.

He identified the mobilisation of local knowledge and social capital, community participation, strategic partnerships and empowerment as key elements required to build sustainable and healthy communities.

Prof. Sh*ttu urged stakeholders to involve communities in decisions affecting their livelihoods and strengthen local capacity to develop sustainable solutions to food insecurity and other socio-economic challenges.

The conference featured keynote and lead-paper presentations, interactive sessions and scholarly discussions. Awards were also presented to selected participants in recognition of their contributions.

The event was attended by Deans, Heads of Departments and Units, academic and non-academic staff, students and other stakeholders of the university.

Vice-Chancellor’s Tournament Enters Quarter-Final Stage as Committee Reinstates Two Departments

The 2026 Vice-Chancellor’s Tournament has entered the Quarter-Final stage following the resolution of complaints and petitions arising from the Second Round fixtures.

The Tournament Committee, after carefully reviewing the issues raised by participating departments, reinstated Business Education and Computer Science Education as the competition’s Best Losers.

The two departments, which were eliminated in the Second Round, will now join the other qualified teams in the Quarter-Final stage.

The Committee subsequently released the official Quarter-Final fixtures, with participating departments expected to prepare for what promises to be a highly competitive stage of the tournament.

In a statement, the Committee urged all departments and players to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the competition.

It also emphasized that no player would be allowed to feature in any match without a valid means of student identification.

The Committee expressed its best wishes to all participating teams as the tournament progresses into the Quarter-Final stage, while calling on players and supporters to uphold the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Bunkure Pledges to Clear Staff Promotion, Salary Arrears

........ VC Assures University Community of Improved Welfare, Career Progression

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Education, Zaria, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has pledged to clear outstanding promotion and salary arrears owed to eligible members of staff as part of efforts to improve staff welfare and strengthen career progression in the University.

Prof. Bunkure made the commitment on Thursday, 13 August 2026, during an interactive session with members of the University community at the Dr A. A. Ladan Hall, where he addressed issues concerning staff welfare, promotion, security and institutional development.

On salary arrears, the Vice-Chancellor directed the Bursar to ensure the payment of outstanding salaries owed to some members of staff employed around 2018. He disclosed that some affected staff were still owed up to five months’ salary and directed that the outstanding payments be made within the following week.

Prof. Bunkure also assured staff that all outstanding promotion arrears due to eligible staff would be paid, stressing that no staff member who had earned a promotion would be denied the financial benefits attached to it.

He further reaffirmed that there was no directive to suspend staff promotions, stating that every staff member due for promotion would be promoted in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations.

The Vice-Chancellor announced that Management would constitute a committee to review complaints arising from the staff placement exercise, with representatives of the staff unions to be included to promote fairness, transparency and confidence in the process.

Prof. Bunkure also disclosed that a substantial amount belonging to the University remained in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) following the institution’s migration, saying Management was making efforts to recover the funds.

Speaking on security, the Vice-Chancellor commended members of the University community for their vigilance and support, particularly volunteers who had been conducting night surveillance within the institution. He said their efforts had contributed to a reduction in incidents of theft and urged the University community to sustain the collective responsibility of protecting lives and property.

He also charged academic staff to intensify research and scholarly publications, participate in international conferences and publish in reputable journals to enhance the visibility and global standing of the University.

Prof. Bunkure called for stronger collaboration between the University, industries, government institutions and civil society organisations, noting that such partnerships would help translate research findings and academic activities into practical solutions with wider societal impact.

The Vice-Chancellor further reminded staff of their responsibility to protect official and classified information, directing the Registrar to issue a circular reminding members of the University community of their obligations under the Oath of Secrecy.

Describing the University as his “only pride,” Prof. Bunkure reaffirmed that staff welfare remained a priority of his administration and appealed for continued cooperation, commitment and prayers from members of the University community.

He expressed confidence that through collective effort and sustained support, the University would continue to make meaningful progress in advancing its academic, administrative and infrastructural development.

AN UPDATE ON CIRCULAR ON UPGRADE OF ALUMNI DATA BASE

Sequel to the notice passed by the Directorate of University Advancement and International Interventions on upgrading Alumni data base, I hereby write to correct the notice that the data should reflect from between 2000/2001 session to 2005/2006 session.

Rather, it is 2000/2001 session up to 2026/2027 session as we are targeting to reach at least 50 million members in the Alumni data base.

All inconveniences caused are regretted as it is an oversight.

Danja Community Commends FUE Zaria Over Appointment of DVC

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Education, Zaria, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has received members of the Danja Community, Katsina State, who visited the University to appreciate the institution’s management and Governing Council over the appointment of one of their sons, Professor Kabiru Haruna Danja, as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services.

The delegation was introduced to the Vice-Chancellor by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Kabiru Haruna Danja.

The visit was aimed at expressing the community’s appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, the University Management and the Governing Council, led by the Pro-Chancellor, Ambassador Baba Jidda Ahmad, OFR, for finding Professor Danja worthy of the appointment.

Receiving the delegation, Professor Bunkure appreciated the Danja Community for the visit and said the appointment of Professor Danja was based strictly on competence, merit and suitability for the position.

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting effectiveness, professionalism and excellence in the discharge of its academic and administrative responsibilities.

He noted that the institution would continue to uphold merit and competence in its leadership and management processes in the interest of the University’s growth and development.

The delegation expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception and prayed for his continued success, as well as the sustained progress and development of the Federal University of Education, Zaria.

FUE Zaria Hosts International Conference on Inclusive STEM Education

...... Scholars, policymakers seek stronger research, digital innovation, university-industry collaboration

The Federal University of Education, Zaria, has hosted its Second International Hybrid Conference organised by the Faculty of Science and Science Education, bringing together scholars, researchers, policymakers, educationists, students and other stakeholders to deliberate on sustainable and inclusive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

The conference, themed “Reimagining Knowledge Systems for Digital Transformation and Sustainable Development in the 21st Century,” focused on digital transformation, research and innovation, inclusiveness, educational excellence and the need to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Yahya Isa Bunkure, described the conference as a significant milestone in the institution’s academic development and a reflection of its commitment to advancing scholarship, research and innovation.

Professor Bunkure said the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies had made it imperative for educational institutions to rethink conventional knowledge systems and prepare graduates for the demands of the future.

He stressed the need to equip graduates with digital competence, critical-thinking skills, creativity, ethical values and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

The Vice-Chancellor also advocated the preservation and integration of indigenous knowledge into modern education, particularly in agriculture, medicine, culture, language, architecture and environmental management.

He called for stronger partnerships among government, academia, industry, civil society and development organisations to promote sustainable development.

Professor Bunkure commended the Local Organising Committee, Academic Committee, Technical Committee, Protocol Committee, Student Committee, sponsors and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the conference.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Science Education, Dr. Mu’awiya Haruna Usman, called for a fundamental transformation of Nigeria’s education system to produce entrepreneurs, innovators and problem-solvers.

Dr. Usman said universities must redesign their curricula to equip students with practical and entrepreneurial skills capable of addressing contemporary challenges.

He stressed that sustainable STEM education must be inclusive and accessible to all learners, irrespective of gender, disability, socioeconomic status or geographical location.

The Dean further called for stronger collaboration between universities, industries and research institutions to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions.

The Chairman of the opening ceremony and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Kontagora, Professor Farouq AbdulRashid Haruna, urged participants to maximise the conference’s keynote presentations, technical sessions and panel discussions.

The Professor encouraged researchers to develop practical recommendations capable of addressing educational and developmental challenges and announced a ₦500,000 donation to support academic activities of the faculty, he subsequently declared the conference officially open.

The keynote speaker, Professor Onu Amen David, called for stronger university-industry collaboration, curriculum reform and increased investment in research infrastructure.

Professor David said educational excellence should be measured not only by academic qualifications but also by graduates’ ability to demonstrate innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, ethical reasoning and social responsibility.

He urged universities to develop practical solutions to community challenges, including renewable energy, water purification, waste management, recycling, health education and sustainable production.

He also advocated greater use of Artificial Intelligence, Learning Management Systems, simulation technologies, Open Educational Resources and digital assessment.

Representing the Kaduna State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Mohammed Sani commended the leadership of Professor Bunkure and highlighted the university’s growing academic profile.

Dr. Sani noted that the hosting of two international conferences within eleven months, with participation by 43 professors and 15 associate professors, demonstrated the institution’s expanding academic engagement.

On behalf of the Commissioner, Right Honourable Dr. Abdullah Aminu Shagali announced a donation of ₦500,000 in support of the conference.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Alhaji Ubale Ismail, commended the university management and conference organisers for bringing scholars from within and outside Nigeria together.

He particularly praised the Local Organising Committee for its dedication and encouraged to the Vice-Chancellor to sustain initiatives aimed at strengthening the institution’s academic standing.

Joining the conference virtually from Greece, is Professor Rania, she highlighted the potential of digital technologies to promote inclusive education and expand access to learning.

She advocated the use of assistive technologies, accessible learning platforms, differentiated instruction and flexible assessment systems to accommodate diverse learners.

Professor Rania, however, warned that the digital divide remained a major obstacle, particularly in communities affected by limited access to devices, unreliable internet connectivity and inadequate digital literacy.

She called for increased AI literacy and responsible use of emerging technologies, stressing that digital transformation must remain inclusive and accessible.

The lead paper presenter, Professor Gafar Shaibu of Bayero University, Kano, contributed to discussions on the future of STEM education and research.

Participants at the conference called for research institutions to develop innovations that address real-world educational, technological, environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

They also advocated closer collaboration among universities, government, industry, professional bodies and communities to strengthen research, innovation and sustainable development.

The conference concluded with a call for stakeholders to translate its recommendations into policies, research initiatives, technological innovations and practical interventions capable of improving education and contributing to sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
