I did not graduate with a first-class. I did not even graduate with a 2.1. I left UNIBEN with a 2.2. Not because I was not smart, but because I did not make productive use of my time.
I used to tell people that academics was not important and that we came to school to serve God. Now that I look back, I know that was not a balanced truth. The truth is this; You came to school to study. While doing that, you can still serve God with all your heart. Do both. Read like there is no God and serve God like there is no exam. That is what balance looks like.
I served in fellowship with all my heart. I was education coordinator, publicity secretary, and later vice president of my fellowship. And I am grateful for the experience. But if I had another chance, I would still serve God and also place great value on my academics. I would have planned better.
If you are still in school, please hear me. A good grade will not save your life, but it will open doors for you. Scholarships, jobs, and other opportunities are easier to access when you graduate with a 2.1 or higher. I know everyone may not come out with a first-class, but at least give it your best. Try not to fail.
If your grades are bad right now, it is not too late to turn things around. Start attending your classes. Pay attention. Ask your teachers/lecturers when you do not understand something. Form a study group with friends who are serious.
Use YouTube and Google to learn extra. Put your phone aside when it is time to study. Avoid people who distract you. Pray for wisdom, and then study like your future depends on it—because it does.
And for those of you who have already graduated and feel stuck because of your result, I want you to know that it is not the end. If your certificate cannot give you a job, look within you.
There is something you can do. It may be teaching, baking, sewing, talking, cleaning, managing, organizing, decorating, or anything else. You just need to learn how to package that gift and sell it to the world. That simple skill can feed your family and even create jobs for other people.
So wake up. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Your grade is not your limit. Let your value speak louder than your result.
