Tell me, why doesn’t your school have a chess club yet?

Did you know the practical lessons of life can also be learned on a chessboard?

Planning. Critical thinking. Strategy. Weighing options. Making decisions. Winning. Accepting losses gracefully. Learning from mistakes. Building confidence and self-esteem.

All of these valuable lessons can be taught through chess.

So pick up your phone and invite a chess coach for your learners today. They’ll thank you for it.

We concluded our Chess Club’s activities for the year with an exciting internal competition at Cambridge international school, Warri, that brought together some of our brightest minds from both the Primary and Secondary sections of Cambridge International School. The event was not just about winning, it was a celebration of strategy, focus, and critical thinking.

After a series of intense matches, Albert Esijemide emerged as our Chess Champion, with Ekebuike Great claiming the 2nd position and Umukoro David finishing strong in 3rd place. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to these talented students for their outstanding performance and dedication.

At Cambridge International School, we believe chess develops essential life skill: patience, problem-solving, foresight, and concentration, that go far beyond the board. Encouraging children to play chess nurtures logical thinking, improves academic performance, and instills confidence in decision-making.

We are proud of all our young players for demonstrating sportsmanship, discipline, and intellectual curiosity throughout the year. We look forward to even greater achievements in the coming season!

Who said motherhood slows you down? At 38, Koneru Humpy just proved it can power the greatest comebacks.

She's made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semifinals of the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup.

Her composed draw against China's Song Yuxin didn't just seal a final-four finish - it also secured India a coveted spot in the Candidates Tournament.

But Humpy's story isn't one of overnight glory - it's one of relentless passion.

By 16, she had already clinched three national titles (in Britain and India) and broken Judit Polgar's record to become the youngest woman grandmaster at the time.

Then came a pause.

After giving birth to her daughter, Humpy stepped away from the board.

In her words: "I always knew I'd return to chess... I just didn't know when."

And return she did - in style.

In just months, she stormed back, winning two Women's Grand Prix titles (2019-20), the 2020 Cairns Cup, and her first Women's World Rapid Championship the same year.

In December 2024, she claimed the title once again, scoring 8.5/11 to become a two-time World Rapid Champion.

From 9-hour training days as a teen to a reset as a new mother, Humpy's journey shows that resilience can be quiet - and powerful.

Her philosophy? "It's more about what can be done than what should be done."
