Reading, unlike speech, is not hardwired. It must be explicitly taught.

We cant expect kids to know what we've never taught them. Explicit instruction is key!

Help your child master this powerful reading strategy!

After reading a sentence, paragraph, or passage, teach your child to pause and ask themselves these key questions:

- Does this make sense to me?
- Do I understand what I just read?
- Can I picture it in my head?
- Does it connect to what came before?
- What might happen next?

If the answer to any of these is "no"—especially if it doesn't sound right, feel clear, or stick in their memory—that's the signal to reread (or even read slower, look up a tricky word, or reread the previous part for context).

This simple self-check habit builds independent reading regulation—the ability to notice and fix comprehension breakdowns on their own. It's one of the most effective ways to turn struggling readers into confident, self-aware ones.
