When Environmental Chemistry Meets Artificial Intelligence: Rethinking Water Quality Monitoring in Nigeria

The Water Quality Monitoring Team at International International Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research, University of Uyo have evaluated the performance of six regression-based ML algorithms in predicting the Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI) for selected water sources across Ikono, Oku, Etoi, and Offot Clans in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

The significance lies in the potential of ML models to simplify and speed up the interpretation of water-quality data, reducing the computational burden associated with conventional water-quality index calculations and potentially supporting more efficient data-driven policies for sustainable water resources management.

This research exemplifies the kind of interdisciplinary work we promote at ICEESR where environmental chemistry, data science and technology come together to better understand Nigeria's environmental challenges.

♻️ TURNING PLASTIC WASTE INTO FUEL: RESEARCH FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

What if the plastic waste littering our streets, schools and communities could become a valuable energy resource?

At the International Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research University of Uyo, our research goes beyond identifying environmental problems, we develop locally relevant scientific solutions.

One of our research studies investigated the conversion of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic waste, including discarded water sachets, into fuel-range hydrocarbons through pyrolysis using Nigerian local clay composites.

🔬 What did the research find?

Using bentonite clay sourced from Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, researchers developed a mesoporous clay composite and investigated its effectiveness as a catalyst for plastic pyrolysis.

The catalytic process achieved a liquid product yield of 89.5%, compared with 84.4% for the non-catalytic process. The resulting hydrocarbons showed physicochemical properties resembling commercial fuels, with the catalytic product exhibiting characteristics within the gasoline and other fuel ranges.

More importantly, the study demonstrates how Nigerian natural resources, locally fabricated technology and scientific innovation can be combined to address two pressing challenges at once: plastic waste management and energy recovery.
