A DAY OF PROGRESS AND PATNERSHIP AT ICEESR WITH THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, UYO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA
We were deeply honored to receive the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, at the ongoing construction site of the International Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR), University of Uyo.
The Director, Prof. Edu Inam commended the Uyo Local Government Chairman's visit as one that is not just ceremonial, but a reaffirmation of the Local Government’s commitment in fostering research that directly addresses climate, energy, and sustainability challenges facing our communities today.
Yesterday's visitation was made even more remarkable as Hon. Dr. Uwemedimo Udo officially joined the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, for the commissioning of the newly equipped Chemistry Research laboratory at the Department of Chemistry, one of ICEESR’s key affiliate facilities.
After the inspection of the ICEESR building project, the Chairman promised to support the building project with more funding and resource mobilization.
Here at ICEESR, we build more than just structures. We are building a hub of innovation, a centre of excellence and a beacon of sustainability research in Nigeria and beyond.
This visit and donation signifies a vital synergy between research institutions and local governance, as it is the kind of collaboration that drives real impact.

ICEESR MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025 WITH TREE PLANTING AND PLASTIC WASTE CAMPAIGN
The International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR) at the University of Uyo joined the global movement to celebrate World Environment Day 2025, held on Thursday, June 5, under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.”
This year’s program was tagged “ICEESR: The Green Zone”, a symbolic title that reflects our mission to foster sustainable, eco-friendly practices through research, education, and direct community action.
As part of the day’s activities, ICEESR hosted a dynamic mix of planting Queen Palm Trees and awareness campaigns.
As part of the World Environment Day, we launched a tree-planting initiative focused on Queen Palm trees, selected for their environmental and aesthetic value. These trees were strategically planted around ICEESR at the University of Uyo to promote biodiversity, carbon absorption, and green landscaping.
Environmental Sanitation focused on Plastic Waste
in response to the urgent global issue of plastic pollution, ICEESR staff, students, and volunteers took part in a community clean-up exercise. We targeted areas heavily impacted by plastic waste within the University of Uyo, Main Campus and emphasized the importance of proper disposal, recycling, and reducing plastic use.
We also highlighted some of ICEESR’s current sustainability projects, including innovations in renewable energy and waste-to-wealth solutions. These initiatives are part of our broader strategy to embed environmental consciousness into academic and community life.
With strong participation from students and the ACS Student Chapter UNIUYO, the event emphasized the role of scientific research in shaping environmental policy and grassroots impact.
We extend our gratitude to every volunteer, student, and partner who contributed to the success of this year’s event. Your commitment proves that meaningful change begins with small, consistent steps.
