🧮 I DON'T JUST TEACH MATHEMATICS — I HELP STUDENTS OVERCOME THEIR FEAR OF IT.

For many students, Mathematics is not difficult because they are incapable of learning it.

Sometimes, it becomes difficult because they have already convinced themselves:

> “I am not good at Mathematics.”
“Mathematics is too hard.”
“I can never understand this.”
“I hate Mathematics.”

And that is where my work as a Mathematics teacher begins.

👨‍🏫 My approach is simple: CHANGE THE FEAR BEFORE TEACHING THE FORMULA.

Over the years of teaching Mathematics, I have learnt that every learner does not need the same explanation.

Some students need the concept broken down into smaller steps.

Some need practical examples.

Some need repeated practice.

Some need someone to patiently tell them:

“You can do this. Let's try it together.”

And some simply need a teacher who will not make them feel embarrassed when they get an answer wrong.

❤️ I TEACH STUDENTS TO SEE MATHEMATICS DIFFERENTLY.

Instead of presenting Mathematics as a collection of complicated formulas, I help learners understand the reason behind the process.

We start from what they already know.

Then we build gradually.

Simple → Familiar → Challenging → Mastery.

When a student who once avoided Mathematics begins raising their hand to answer a question, something important has happened.

When a learner who used to say “I don't understand” begins saying “Sir, give me another one,” that is progress.

When a child begins solving a problem independently and confidently, that is the impact I want to create.

📚 I ALSO BELIEVE IN REACHING THE SLOW LEARNER.

A student's pace of learning should not determine their potential.

Through patient explanations, additional exercises, revision, Mathematics clinics and individual attention, I try to give learners the opportunity to catch up and build confidence.

Because being slow today does not mean you will remain behind tomorrow.

🏆 THE BIGGEST REWARD IS NOT ALWAYS THE EXAM SCORE.

It is seeing a student who once feared Mathematics begin to approach a difficult question with confidence.

It is hearing:

> “Sir, I think I can solve this.”

That sentence means a lot to a teacher.

Because before we can produce excellent Mathematics students, we must first help them believe:

“I CAN LEARN MATHEMATICS.”

That is the kind of impact I strive to create in every classroom.

I don't want my students merely to pass Mathematics.
I want them to understand it, apply it and develop the confidence to face it. ❤️🧮

💬 NOW, I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU:

If you were once my student — or your ward is currently learning Mathematics from me — what impact have you seen?

Did I help you or your ward overcome the fear of Mathematics?

How would you rate my impact as a Mathematics teacher?

👇 Be honest. I genuinely want to hear from you.

🔥 A GREAT TEACHER DOESN’T START TEACHING WHEN THEY PICK UP THE MARKER.

They start teaching the moment they walk into the classroom. 👀📚

At Akanessda Educational, we believe teaching is more than delivering a lesson. It is about seeing the learner behind the school uniform.

Before starting a lesson, an intentional teacher notices these 6 things:

❤️ 1. HOW STUDENTS ARE FEELING

Who looks excited?
Who looks tired?
Who is unusually quiet?
Who seems worried or distracted?

A learner carrying an emotional burden may struggle to concentrate.

Sometimes, a simple “Are you okay today?” can make a child feel seen.

👥 2. WHO IS SITTING WITH WHOM — AND WHY

Classroom seating can tell a story.

Who always sits together?
Who suddenly sits alone?
Who distracts whom?
Who seems uncomfortable?

Great teachers don't rush to label behaviour. They first try to understand what may be behind it.

🌱 3. THE CLASSROOM CLIMATE AND ENERGY

Is the class calm or restless?

Are learners ready to concentrate, or do they need a moment to settle?

A good teacher knows that sometimes you have to prepare the classroom for learning before delivering the lesson.

💡 4. WHAT STUDENTS ARE CURIOUS ABOUT

Listen to their questions.

“What if…?”
“Why does this happen?”
“Can we try it another way?”

Curiosity is not a distraction from learning.

Curiosity IS part of learning.

When a teacher notices what sparks a learner's interest, they can use it as a doorway into deeper understanding.

🎒 5. UNspoken NEEDS

Not every learner will say:

“I don't understand.”

Some will simply become quiet.

Some will copy without understanding.

Some will stop attempting the work.

Some will be afraid of making mistakes.

A great teacher watches for these signals and asks:

👉 “What does this learner need from me right now?”

⭐ 6. THE STRENGTHS AND POTENTIAL IN EVERY LEARNER

This may be the most important one.

Don't only look at what a child cannot do yet.

Look for what they can do.

Look for creativity.
Look for curiosity.
Look for leadership.
Look for problem-solving.
Look for persistence.
Look for hidden confidence.

Every learner may have a strength waiting for someone to notice it.

👩‍🏫 THE REAL LESSON

Before we teach the subject, we should understand the learner.

A lesson plan tells us:

📖 WHAT am I going to teach?

But observation helps us answer:

❤️ WHO am I teaching?

And sometimes, the best teaching begins before the first word of the lesson is spoken.

🌱 DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP LEARNERS WHO NEED MORE TIME

Not every child learns at the same speed.

Some children understand a concept after the first explanation. Others need more time, more practice, different examples, or a different approach before the concept becomes clear.

The important thing is this:

Needing more time does not mean a child is unintelligent. ❤️

Here are practical ways parents and teachers can help:

1️⃣ Identify the Learning Gap

Before saying a child is struggling, find out exactly where the difficulty begins.

Is it reading? Basic number skills? Concentration? Following instructions? Previous concepts?

Understanding the gap helps you provide the right support.

2️⃣ Break Big Tasks into Smaller Steps

Instead of giving a child a large task at once, divide it into manageable parts.

For example, instead of teaching multiplication of two-digit numbers immediately, first ensure the child is comfortable with:
place value → multiplication facts → simple multiplication → two-digit multiplication.

3️⃣ Use Different Teaching Methods

Don't depend only on talking and writing on the board.

Use:
📌 Pictures
📌 Objects
📌 Demonstrations
📌 Stories
📌 Games
📌 Diagrams
📌 Real-life examples
📌 Short videos where appropriate

Sometimes the problem isn't the child's ability to learn—it is the method being used to teach.

4️⃣ Give More Practice—but Not Endless Work

Practice builds confidence, but overwhelming a struggling learner with too many questions can create frustration.

Give short, purposeful practice and gradually increase the difficulty.

5️⃣ Teach from the Known to the Unknown

Connect new knowledge to something the child already understands.

For example:

If a child understands ₦10 + ₦10 = ₦20, use that understanding to introduce repeated addition and eventually multiplication.

Learning becomes easier when new ideas have something familiar to connect to.

6️⃣ Give the Child Thinking Time

Some learners need extra processing time.

After asking a question, don't immediately say:

"You don't know?"

Give the child time to think, organize the answer and respond.

Silence is sometimes part of learning.

7️⃣ Praise Effort and Improvement

Don't praise only correct answers.

Recognize progress:

👏 "You got three correct today; yesterday you got one."

👏 "I like the way you tried another method."

👏 "You didn't give up."

Small improvements can build the confidence that eventually produces bigger improvements.

8️⃣ Avoid Comparing Children

Statements like:

❌ "Your sister understands this."
❌ "Look at your classmates."
❌ "You are too slow."

may discourage rather than motivate.

Instead say:

✅ "Let's see what part you understand, and we'll work from there."

9️⃣ Use One-on-One or Small-Group Support

Some children perform better when they receive individual attention or work in a small group.

This allows the teacher to identify misconceptions and provide immediate correction.

🔟 Be Patient and Consistent

Learning difficulties rarely disappear because someone shouted louder.

Patience + the right strategy + consistent practice = progress.

And remember:

«A child who learns slowly is not necessarily a child who cannot learn.»

Our responsibility as parents and teachers is not merely to ask, "Why don't you understand?"

We should also ask:

"How can I teach this in a way that helps you understand?" ❤️

🌟 Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.
