STRATEGIES FOR SURVIVING ECONOMIC CRISIS BY PAUL OKUK

It is now visible to the blind that the cost of living in Nigeria is skyrocketing by the day hence, the need for proper planning and adjustment of daily expenses.

Surviving an economic crisis requires careful planning, resourcefulness, and adaptability. While specific strategies may vary depending on the nature and severity of the crisis in your home, these general guidelines can help you navigate through difficult times. Thus:

1. ASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION: Start by evaluating your current financial status. Understand your income, expenses, debts, and savings. This will give you a clear picture of where you stand and help you identify areas that need immediate attention.

2. CREATE AND WORK WITHIN BUDGET: Develop a realistic budget that prioritizes essential expenses and cuts down on discretionary spending. Look for areas where you can reduce costs, such as eating out, entertainment/ drinking, or unnecessary subscriptions.

3. BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND: Aim to save at least 3 to 6 months' worth of living expenses in an easily accessible account. An emergency fund acts as a safety net during tough times and prevents you from relying heavily on credit or salary.

4. DIVERSIFY INCOME STREAMS: Relying solely on one source of income can be risky during an economic crisis. Explore opportunities to diversify your income, such as freelance work, part-time jobs, affiliate/ network marketing, or starting a small business on the side.

5 REDUCE DEBT: High-interest debts can be particularly burdensome and emotionally draining during economic downturns. Focus on paying down debts aggressively, starting with the ones that have the highest interest rates so that you can regain your peace and financial stability.

6. NEGOTIATE WITH CREDITORS: If you're facing financial hardship, don't hesitate to communicate with your creditors. Some may be willing to offer temporary relief, such as lower interest rates or extended payment terms.

7. CUT UNNECESSARY EXPENSES: Identify and eliminate non-essential expenses. This may involve downsizing to a more affordable living arrangement or selling items you no longer need.

8. ENHANCE FINANCIAL LITERACY: Educate yourself about personal finance, investing, and money management. The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to make informed financial decisions.

9. PROTECT YOUR ASSETS: Ensure that you have the necessary insurance coverage, such as health, home, and car insurance, to protect yourself from unexpected expenses. Most poor minded people are afraid of taking insurance coverages because they think it's waste of money.

10. EXPLORE GOVERNMENT/ PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORTS: During economic crises, government, private organisations and some individuals often provide assistance programs to those in need. Check for unemployment benefits, food assistance, or other forms of support that you may be eligible for.

11. INVEST WISELY: If you have investments, avoid panic selling during market downturns. Consult with a financial advisor to create a long-term investment strategy that aligns with your risk tolerance and financial goals.

12. IMPROVE MARKETABLE SKILLS: Invest in yourself by acquiring new skills or enhancing existing ones. This can increase your employability and open up new opportunities.

13. COLLABORATE AND SHARE RESOURCES: Work together with friends, family, or community members to share resources and support each other during challenging times.

14. STAY HEALTHY: Your health is essential during any crisis. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress effectively.

15. STAY POSITIVE AND ADAPTABLE: An economic crisis can be emotionally challenging. Stay positive, remain adaptable, and be open to changing your strategies as the situation evolves.
