🐺 The Capitoline Wolf — Symbol of Rome’s Legendary OriginsThe Capitoline Wolf, or Lupa Capitolina, is one of the most enduring symbols of ancient Rome — a striking bronze sculpture depicting the she-wolf who, according to myth, nursed the twins Romulus and Remus, founders of the city. The she-wolf herself is rendered with tense, protective energy:muscles taut, ears alert, a guardian poised between danger and nurture. The twins, shown beneath her, were added during the Renaissance, but the wolf has long stood as Rome’s emblem of resilience and destiny. For centuries, scholars believed the sculpture was an Etruscan bronze from around the 5th century BCE, based on style and ancient literary references.Modern analyses, however, suggest the wolf may date to the medieval period (11th–12th century), while still drawing inspiration from classical forms.Regardless of its exact age, its cultural significance remains profound.Displayed on the Capitoline Hill, the Lupa symbolizes:Rome’s mythic beginningsthe power of maternal protectionand the intertwined forces of wilderness and civilizationAn icon not just of a city, but of an entire ancient world
