BACK TO SCHOOL: 5 ATTITUDE CHANGES YOUR CHILD MAY NEED BEFORE RESUMPTION
As a new school term approaches, buying new books and uniforms isn’t the only preparation your child needs. Sometimes, the most valuable preparation is helping them develop positive habits and attitudes.
Here are 5 areas you can gently support before school resumes:
1. Help them manage “I don’t feel like it.”
Remind your child that it’s normal not to feel motivated all the time. Encourage them to take small steps and complete important tasks, even when they don’t feel like doing them.
2. Encourage them to listen before responding.
Good listening is an important part of learning. Gently remind your child to pay attention when someone is speaking and give themselves time to understand before responding.
3. Support them in becoming more independent.
Can they pack their school bag, organise their books, or get dressed on time? Give them opportunities to practise these small responsibilities, while offering guidance when needed. Over time, these habits can build confidence.
4. Help them move beyond “I can’t.”
When your child says, “I can’t do it,” encourage them to try saying, “I’ll try,” or “I’m still learning.” Let them know that finding something difficult does not mean they are incapable—it simply means they may need practice, patience, or support.
5. Teach and model respect.
Respect for teachers, classmates, school staff, and others can be nurtured every day at home. Show your child what respect looks like through kind words, thoughtful actions, and consideration for others.
Parents, remember:
School supports children academically, while home helps shape the attitudes and habits they bring into the classroom.
Before resumption, ask yourself: “What attitude or habit can I gently help my child develop this term?”
