When I started teaching french One thing I know people down here in the East are not willing to pay for is knowledge or any form of education beyond what they know.
They expect that it is your way of giving back to the society or maintaining relationships.
They are quick to send you their childrens french assignments but would never register for your classes.
I remember trying to do a free french show in one of the radio stations in umuahia. The manager dribbled me till I got tired. The other one was charging one exorbitant rate for airtime. I simply laughed. The absurdity of me paying to offer a service people pay good money for was debasing.
Another time I tried applying to a school, I laughed at the ridiculous remuneration they were offering. I simply Collected my cv and left them before I would be tempted to knock the headteacher in the middle of his head.
Today, I am grateful that we have built valuable clientele across spheres of life. The last time I was invited to bring my CV to a school, they simply told me they couldn’t pay me which I appreciated the sheer honesty. Unknowingly to them, I just wanted to teach no matter what they were going to offer at the time.
In due time people will begin to appreciate the value of learning a foreign language.
When the competition gets stiffer, the defining factor usually is your competitive advantage!
