Ukara is distinctively imbued with Nsibidi symbols, and it is from such sources that most classical Nsibidi symbols are referenced and modernized to form the contemporary Neo-Nsibidi system.

Ukara is often described as a "textile manuscript" because it preserves hundreds of Nsibidi signs. Before extensive documentation of Nsibidi on paper, Ukara served as one of the primary media through which symbols were recorded, transmitted, and displayed.
For scholars studying Nsibidi, Ukara is invaluable because many symbols found on historic cloths are no longer commonly known today.
