URHOBO NATIONAL HEROES’ DAY SPEECH BY THE OSU RE IGHELLE OF URHOBO MUDIAGA’S MOVEMENT ACTIVIST UGHERE OGHENERO BLESSED
Today as we celebrate the Urhobo Heroes’ Day, it is right time for us to recognize and celebrate our rich historical cultural heritage as one big nation and to pay tribute to all those who in the past and those who today have made significant contribution to establish our unique Urhobo cultural, economic, and political foundations.
It is painful that we couldn’t Organize the URHOBO HEROS DAY CELEBRATION 2022 like we have been doing before now due to circumstances unforeseen and less support from our people ..it is painful that in all we try to do the less we are appreciated.. we must learn to rise up and start encouraging ourselves as a nation if we must stand up tall amongst other nations..
I would like to firstly heartily congratulate all those privileged to be recipients of the Heroes Day honorary award last year 2021 and also use this medium to charge all well meaning Urhobo sons and daughters to take up responsibilities and follow in the foot steps of our heroes past for the realization of a greater Urhobo nation.
We recognize the good office our President; President Muhammadu Buhari, the Governor of Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the Senator Representing the Urhobo people Deputy Senator of the Senate house DSP Ovie Omo agege ,all principal office holders of the Urhobo community both at home and in diaspora, the Ovies of the 24 kingdoms of the Urhobo nation, the Youths of the Urhobo land and all well meaning sons and Daughters of our great Urhobo nation. We say thank you all for your immeasurable support to our clamour for a better Urhobo nation.
Since the inception of the Urhobo Mudiaga Movements’, we have been at the fore front of topical issues affecting our collective existence as a people. Some of our achievements which might be numerous to count include but are not limited to the following which would be briefly touched subsequently.
As an organization, we have made serios efforts on the issue of insecurity ravaging our dear nation Nigeria. On the aftermath of the Fulani herds men attack at Agadama community, we visited the scenes of the heinous crime, assisted in returning the tumultuous community to peace and ease while making concerted efforts to bring the attackers to justice by corroborating efforts with various security agencies.
We took up this Case to foster peace in the region and to establish synergy with our Yoruba counter parts who are ahead in the struggle for the Herdsmen attack that has befallen Nigeria.
While carrying out our responsive civic duties, on the 11th Day of September 2020, the members of the Urhobo Mudiaga Movements met with the Aere Ona Kankafo of Yoruba land Iba Gani Adams to synergize efforts with the Yoruba land on lasting peace and security in the region. The Urhobo Mudiaga Movements’ had previously thrown its weight behind the Amotekun operation, lauding the outfit as a highly commendable one for effective community and state policing. We use this medium to appreciate the person of activist Akpoteta Kelly who is the Secretary General of the Urhobo Mudiaga Movements’ who together with Ufuoma Anighoro and the Osu re Ighelle activist Blessed Realman Ughere paid visit to the Yoruba Monarch.
Permit me to also site the joint press conference which was held in partnership with the Urhobo World United (uwuu) on the 1st Day of May 2020 which addressed issues of the killer heards men affecting the uhobo nation.
As a pro-Urhobo organization, we have sponsored bills and motions and at various points in time applied pressure on the ruling elites to influence laws which will have impact on our existence as a people. We successfully sent out memos to representatives both at Federal and State levels protesting the establishment of the RUGA settlement scheme proposed by the Northerners. The abandonment of the bill was a huge success for our efforts. We also sent memos in regards of the water bill which was seen to be satanic to us a people In The Nigeria delta region.
Furthermore, we have been involved in various charitable exercise all-round the 24 Urhobo kingdoms with aim of alleviating poverty in our society. The reliefs material distributed to members of various communities by our team during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown is a major stride on this front.
As a progressive positive driven organization, we have been able to inter-plead between the various factions of the Urhobo Progressive Union and to proffer solutions to the different factions in the Urhobo Progressive Union even though are best efforts are yet to reap desired outcome as we are yet to implement the resolutions reached. We initiated series of peace talk meetings between the various factions of the UPU THAT the Olorogun Omene faction and the Olorogun Taga’s faction. I want to seize this opportunity to appreciate a very influential member of the Urhobo nation in my team who was very instrumental in the peace talk meetings between the various factions. This is no other person than the good Don Efe Emaya from Uvwie kingdom. We also want to thank Hon Okagbare Ochuko for his instrumental role in making sure the peace talk meetings held between the divisive factions in the UPU. Furthermore, I want to appreciate Ms. Sandr Akpoguma and Barrister Maxwell Ogedegbe for being instrumental to the team in setting up the peace talk meetings there are others I might not be able to mention . That tried there best we believe if love exist with us one day we shall be United than the word unity itself .
On the issue of security of the Urhobo people, as an organization, Urhobo Mudiaga Movements’ have made concerted efforts towards the sensitization of various communities at various levels for minimum casualties from the ravaging blood thirsty Fulani heardsmen in our midst. We have successfully held strategic meetings engaging key stake holders including community leaders, vigilante teams, youth leaders to mention but a few in different community town hall meetings on how to ensure we always have reliable and efficient internal security system in place to protect lives and properties of our fellow kinsmen.
In the last four years of our existence as a body, the Urhobo Mudiaga Movements (UMM) has always celebrated our heroe Late Mukoro Mowoe. We have held on to the celebration of our icon annually because of the significance it holds to us. Whenever we celebrate our heroes, it is seen as a major morale boost for those of us followers to do more in a bid to attain life legacy worthy of emulation. Another significance of this celebration is the preservation of out Urhobo cultural heritage as a nation. Statistics reveals that the Urhobo culture is slowly going into extinction and to halt this decline, this are reasons why we celebrating our Heroes cannot be overlooked.
Permit me to mention here that the celebration today is URHOBO HEROES’ DAY which is an off shoot from the celebration of our patriarch Mukoro Mowoe and this is supposedly the second time we will officially have the URHOBO HEROES DAY in Urhobo land (Today history is been made ).
Today being a special day, we must not forget the primary objective as a nation . The reason for this celebration is to continue to echo aloud the core foundational principles our esteemed heroes has laid down for us to follow which includes but are not limited to security, economic and financial advancement of the Urhobo people which has been seen by many as lasting legacies.
Today we are happy to have committed and well-meaning sons and daughters of Urhobo kingdom worthy of celebration. The likes of Kingsley Obiebi who is the organizer of the Urhobo Economic Summit currently very ill and need all the financial and moral support we can give to him to save his life .
In the calendar year of 2021, we did made concerted networking efforts to build synergy and effectively collaborate with other sister organizations the like objectives for the advancement of the Urhobo nation. We have established relations with the Urhobo Progress Youth Association (UPYA) headed by Omiragwa Marcus Ekwure the upya has a large data base of skillfully trained urhobo youths and has been hosting the urhobo Quizz Competition for years now , with Omiregwa Akpomiemie Oderohwo oversees the quiz competition organized by Councilor Denis Agori this year 2021 ..
Going back in memory lane and with an eye on the future, we are glad to announce our fourth year in existence as an organization and our 4th annual celebrations of the Mukoro Mowoe day. The first year of the celebration was was hosted in Ughelli north secretariat Hall t. The second year, we had a rally jointly organized with the UPU faction led by Hon Nixon Duru and the third we also did celebrate last year at the Ughelli north Secretariat hall giving awards and recognition to deserving individuals. The awards I must say is not given on competitive grounds but rather on meritorious grounds.
Last two years , the event marking the celebration was sponsored by our patriarch and father Olorogun Francis Ariyor; although we could not do much as planned, we were able to organize the rally and lay wreath to our hero’s past. 2021 however, after many deliberations from the Ighelle re Urhobo, we have decided to celebrate not just Mukoro Mowe day but the URHOBO HEROES’ DAY celebration.
Leading to this colorful celebration, on the 9th day of August 2021, we toured the grave site of our heroes to lay wreath. We started with late Demas Akpore’s grave site, advanced to Late Salubi’s grave site and rounded up the obsequies at the grave site of Mukoro Mowoe. While touring the grave sites and laying wreath to our departed heroes, we heartily commiserate our heart felt condolences to the family of our late father and patriarch Brigadier General Dominic Oneya who passed on to glory on Thursday 5th August 2021..
Furthermore, in the spirit of the celebration of our hero’s past, we must aspire to be heroes of our own time. We must strive to be heroes of peace. It is at this junction I call on all factions of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) to come together under one united banner. As a matter of importance, we can no longer continue to be divisive in our affairs as a house divided against itself cannot stand thetests of time. The UPU is in a deplorable state and all hands must be on deck to salvage the sad situation we find ourselves as this organization holds high importance to our collective struggle as a people. We must embrace peace and love instead of prioritizing our personal gains and ego over our collective benefits as a people. We must at this junction think of our history and plan for a progressive future for generations ahead.
Last but not the least, posterity will not forgive me if I fail to recognize and appreciate the role of Omiregwa Activist Rex Emojite Anighoro who has instilled in me the love for the Urhobo nation and the importance of celebrating our heroes annually.
I thank you all for gracing this press conference with your presence and enjoin all sons and daughters of the great Urhobo nation to come together in unity to develop our lands in exemplary manner.
URHOBO OVUOVO!!!
