CATFISH RIVER
(The fish no more bites)
You were the reason
For our sumptuous feasts
Over the years.
Fish, crayfish, periwinkles, oysters, tortoise and reptiles:
Iyak, ndek obu, nkop, ikut inyang ye utai,
Were provided from the sanctuary of our goddess.
You were our music
That was to play eternally.
The message that I receive
Is that I perceive,
The be***al fumes
Caused by the toxic perfumes,
Which they have used to mummify us.
There is no more laughter in the creeks,
The fish no more bites,
Which has worsened our plight.
Our children are weak
And in retreat.
The cool evening breezes,
Delivers only our lives' debris,
No more caress the shores,
Like a gentle comforting hand.
The sky above you
Has become a scab,
Desolate:
A festering sore
That has refused to heal.
As foam clings to the crest of the wave,
We hope on you:
To purify our land
And like the Phoenix,
Rise from your ashes and live.
We are entwined like Siamese twins,
Made for each other.
Arise and heed our cries
Over this disgrace
And wanton destruction of our space.
You were the reason
For our sumptuous feasts
Over the years.
Fish, crayfish, periwinkles, oysters, tortoise and reptiles:
Iyak, ndek obu, nkop, mfi, ikut inyang ye utai,
Were provided from the sanctuary of our goddess.
You were our music
That was to play eternally.
