All Parents need to read this
Every time we do lunch in class, his food is the biggest portion. His parents not minding that he eats little, wants him to be chubby. I make him come to my table with his food, so I can coerce him to eat, to his parents satisfaction. He just put the food in his mouth trying to chew and grind with his canines instead of with his molars and premolars.
Another girl chews her food forever. She puts a spoonful in her mouth and chew, chew, chew. Then she gags trying to swallow, but never really throws up. It takes two period of lunch time to get them to eat.
Problem is, I'm being pressured to pressure them to eat. And yes, they are very healthy 4 year olds, full of energy for their age.
I did a little research online.
The bad news is.., there is no miracle cure for slow eaters, picky or bored kids on the dining table.
The good news is.., many more parents all over the world are facing the same or worse case scenarios of kids who don't really like food.
The best news is.., all this issues exception of a contrary diagnose from a Doctor, is normal. Dr Gellner says " Between one and five years old, it is normal for a child's appetite to slow down."
Babies gain an average of 15 pounds during their first year. Between ages 1 and 5, children normally gain only 4-5 pounds a year. They can normally go three or four months without any weight gain. Because they are not growing as fast, they need fewer calories and they seem to have a poorer appetite known as physiological anorexia.
Another thing to note is " how much a child chose to eat is controlled by the appetite centre in the brain."
So most of these kids have already conditioned their minds on eating a little portion. Tee, for example, told me, "teacher, I will always finish my food when I'm ten."
He has already conditioned his mind to deal with food gradually till he his ten. His parents won't listen.
As for my girl, her oral sensory system is not properly developed, that explains why she gags, squirm and get frightful during meal times. Her soft palate or posterior pharynx react every time it is being stimulated by food. She needs time to develop her oral sensory system.
I have seen kids like this in the teaching profession, eating a bite here and there, but still healthy and strong, wild and free. They moved to the next class, and the next and the next. Oftentimes they just lose the character of not eating along the way, without much ado.
But if you push them all the time, they will develop a real hatred for food. New research shows that allowing kids to eat only when they are hungry is the way to go.
So I strongly recommend, if a child is not sick or has a severe eating disorder diagnosed by a doctor, let the child be. Let them eat as much as they need for growth and energy.
Just make sure to serve healthy meals and snacks. If they are hungry, they'll eat. Once a child is old enough to feed himself, never pick up the spoon.
Go ahead, eat and be chubby yourself.
I am committed to preserving and helping you raise the next generation. Your child first!

Please drop your comments on how you got them to eat, and what you think, so others can learn. Thanks.
