The drive home is silent, only interrupted by Mrs. Gompil’s heavy breathing. She turns her neck every few seconds in the direction of her daughter.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes mum.” Vera whispers. “Thank you”
“What is that?” She eyes a piece of paper in Vera’s right hand.
“It’s the list of books you said I should write.” Vera hesitates.
“You don’t need it again. You are never going back to that school.” Her mum snaps. “You can throw the list away.”
“Okay mummy.” Vera tucks the note that James slipped her into her bag. “I’ll trash it at home.”
