Oral herpes, also known as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), is a viral infection that affects the mouth, lips, and surrounding areas.

*Causes:*

1. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1,)
2. Contagious through:
- Direct contact with infected saliva or skin
- Sharing utensils, razors, or towels
- Kissing or oral s*x

*Symptoms:*

1. Painful blisters or sores on:
- Lips (cold sores)
- Mouth
- Tongue
- Gums
- Throat
2. Fever
3. Swollen lymph nodes
4. Headache
5. Fatigue

*Stages:*

1. Primary infection: Initial outbreak, often accompanied by flu-like symptoms
2. Latent phase: Virus remains dormant in nerve cells
3. Recurrent phase: Periodic outbreaks, triggered by stress, illness, or hormonal changes

*Treatment:*

1. Antiviral medications:
- Acyclovir
- Valacyclovir
- Famciclovir
2. Topical creams:
- Docosanol
- Penciclovir
3. Pain management:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
- Topical anesthetics

*Prevention:*

1. Practice safe kissing and oral s*x
2. Avoid sharing utensils or personal items
3. Use condoms
4. Maintain good hygiene
5. Manage stress

*Complications:*

1. Herpes simplex encephalitis (rare)
2. Herpes simplex keratitis (eye infection)
3. Increased risk of transmission to ge***al areas

*Diagnosis:*

1. Physical examination
2. Viral culture or PCR test
3. Blood tests (serology)

*Facts:*

1. 80-90% of adults have HSV-1 antibodies
2. Oral herpes is contagious even when symptoms are not present
3. There is no cure, but treatment can manage symptoms
