South Africa's New Visa Rules: What Nigerians Need to Know
As a visa advisor, I’m pleased to share significant changes to South Africa’s visa policy that will positively impact Nigerian travellers. President Cyril Ramaphosa recently introduced a five-year multiple-entry visa for qualified Nigerian businesspeople and removed the requirement for Nigerian tourists to submit their passports when applying for visas.
These changes aim to foster stronger economic and cultural ties between our nations. However, as with any travel process, careful planning is crucial to avoid pitfalls. Here’s my advice for Nigerians considering travel to South Africa:
1. Ensure Eligibility: The five-year multiple-entry visa is targeted at business travellers. Provide all required documents, such as proof of business engagements, to strengthen your application.
2. Double-Check Documentation: While passport submission has been waived for tourists, ensure you have accurate and complete details on your application form. Errors can lead to delays.
3. Plan Ahead: Apply well in advance of your travel date to accommodate any unforeseen delays in processing.
4. Understand Restrictions: Always comply with South African immigration rules during your stay. Overstaying your visa or misusing the visa type could lead to penalties or future denials.
These changes reflect a commitment to improving ease of travel and fostering economic collaboration. By adhering to the requirements and planning meticulously, Nigerians can seize these opportunities.

UK Raises Proof-of-Funds Requirement: What African Students Should Know
From 2nd January 2025, the UK government will increase the amount of money international students must show to prove they can afford to live and study there. For students in London, the monthly amount will rise to £1,483 (about ₦3 million), up from £1,334. Outside London, it will go up to £1,136 (around ₦2.4 million) per month, instead of the current £1,023.
This adjustment reflects the rising cost of living in the UK, but it also places a heavier burden on students from Africa, especially Nigerians, who made up over 53,000 students in UK universities last year. With the naira's depreciation and similar currency struggles across Africa, these changes make it even harder for many families to afford the UK education dream.
What is Proof of Funds?
Proof of funds shows you have enough money to support yourself while studying. It is required for a student visa and can come from:
Personal savings
Sponsorship from family
Scholarships
Educational loans
Failing to meet this requirement could mean your visa application gets denied, disrupting your plans.
Advice for Nigerian and African Students
Start early: Begin saving or securing sponsorship as soon as possible.
Seek scholarships: Many universities and organisations offer funding for African students.
Explore alternatives: If the UK feels out of reach, consider other study destinations like Canada, Germany, or Ireland, which may offer more affordable options.
Plan smartly: Budget for tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses to avoid surprises.
Final Thoughts
This is a challenge but not the end of your dream to study abroad. With proper planning, financial discipline, and the right support, you can overcome this hurdle. Take control of your future—start preparing now.

Canada’s Work Permit Changes from November 2024: Key Updates and What They Mean for You
Starting November 2024, Canada will implement new rules for international students, temporary workers, and their families. Here is what these changes mean for Nigerians, Africans, and other developing nations:
1. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Changes
To qualify for a PGWP, students must reach Canadian Language Benchmark level 7 in English or French and study in high-demand fields (healthcare, technology, skilled trades). Graduates in less in-demand areas may struggle to qualify.
Implication: Canada is prioritising sectors with worker shortages, making it harder to stay if you graduate in low-demand fields.
Advice: Choose high-demand study programmes and work on your language skills.
2. Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)
Only spouses of workers in high-demand fields (e.g., healthcare, construction) will qualify for a permit, reducing the number of eligible spousal permits significantly.
Implication: Families where one spouse is in a low-demand field may struggle to obtain a spousal permit.
Advice: Aim for a high-demand role to increase eligibility for family permits.
3. Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFWP)
Employers can only fill 10% of low-wage roles with foreign workers, and permits for these roles will be shortened from two years to one.
Implication: Fewer low-wage jobs will be available for temporary workers.
Advice: Explore high-demand sectors or pathways to permanent residency.
Takeaway: Focus on high-demand fields, improve language skills, and research alternative residency options.

UK Announces 45,000 Seasonal Work Visas for 2025: A Golden Opportunity for Foreign Workers!
The UK government has recently announced 43,000 seasonal worker visas for the horticulture sector and an additional 2,000 for the poultry sector in 2025. This move supports the UK’s agricultural industry, especially as it faces busy harvest seasons and growing demands for home-grown produce.
For years, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has advocated for a stable, long-term seasonal worker plan. With this announcement, farmers now have the security of knowing that reliable workers will be available, helping keep UK agriculture strong. Earlier in the year, the government extended the seasonal worker scheme, but there was still some uncertainty due to recent elections. NFU leaders worked closely with government officials to highlight the importance of this workforce for food production, and their efforts paid off.
A recent survey by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) found that 91% of seasonal workers had a positive experience working in the UK, with 95% expressing interest in returning. This is a testament to the success of the programme, which not only provides opportunities for international workers but also strengthens the UK's food security.
How to Qualify for a Seasonal Worker Visa
To qualify, applicants need to:
Be at least 18 years old.
Have a certificate of sponsorship from a UK employer.
Show that they have £1,270 in funds to support themselves unless the employer confirms they’ll cover this cost.
Employers are required to ensure that these roles meet minimum wage standards and adhere to UK working hour regulations. The UK government is also focusing on welfare and compliance to protect workers and keep standards high.
With this visa scheme, the UK is helping farmers plan ahead while securing essential labour to maintain its food production. This is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in temporary work in the UK and provides crucial support to the agricultural industry.
