TEACHERS IN NIGERIA THE MOST IMPORTANT, YET THE MOST NEGLECTED

Teachers are the foundation of every great nation. They build doctors, engineers, judges, presidents and leaders of tomorrow.Yet in Nigeria, the very people who produce all other professions are among the most undervalued.
In many developed countries like Germany,Finland and Canada the government treats teachers as national assets. In Germany for example, retired teachers enjoy housing schemes, medical care, reliable pension and in some cases vehicles or mobility support because the nation understands that educating a generation is a lifetime contribution.
But in Nigeria, the story is different.
A teacher can work for 35 years and still struggle to build a house or own a car. Many retire into poverty, depending on relatives or petty trade to survive. Pensions are delayed or unpaid for months or years. The profession that should be one of pride has turned into a symbol of suffering.
Despite this reality, teachers continue to show up every day, shaping minds without the respect or reward they deserve.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN IN NIGERIA?

Poor government prioritization more money goes to politics than education.

Corruption and mismanagement of educational funds.

Lack of policy to protect teachers after retirement.

No strong reward system for long years of service.

Society undervalues teaching as a profession.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE If Nigeria truly wants a great future, the government must rebuild the educational system and uplift teachers. This includes:
1- Housing schemes for teachers and retirees.

2- Timely and sufficient pensions.

3- Better salaries and allowances.

4- Teacher training and welfare programs.

5- Policies that treat teachers as national builders, not just civil servants.

A country that neglects its teachers is a country that has already destroyed its future. The government must wake up, invest in teachers and rebuild education for the next generation because there is no developed country without respected and supported teachers.

If you build the teacher, you build the nation.
