🚨 Astronomers have discovered an extreme new exoplanet, and it’s breaking records.

Meet TOI-2431 b, a rocky world roughly 1.5 times Earth’s size that completes an entire orbit around its star in just 5.4 hours. That’s over 1,600 “years” for every one Earth year!

Located about 117 light-years away, this planet orbits incredibly close to its host star—only 0.0063 AU, or about 933,000 kilometers (580,000 miles) away. As a result, its surface scorches at around 2,000 K (1,727°C or 3,140°F), hot enough to melt rock and metal. Scientists believe its surface may be a molten sea of lava and iron.

TOI-2431 b is also unusually dense, with a mass over 6 times that of Earth and a density of 9.4 g/cmÂł, pointing to a metal-rich composition. The planet is so close to its star that its shape is tidally distorted, stretched like an egg rather than spherical.

But this fiery world is living on borrowed time. Gravitational forces are slowly pulling it inward. In about 31 million years, it’s expected to spiral into its star.

Discovered using NASA’s TESS and ground-based telescopes, TOI-2431 b offers a rare glimpse into the extremes of planetary formation—and what happens when a planet flies too close to its star.
