One week in Lagos Island changed how two of our students see business.

T**i and Aishat spent a week interning at a hair styling organization, learning to make and braid wigs. But what they came back with was bigger than a skill — it was an education in how a real business runs.

They saw how pricing works, how customization builds trust with a client, and how a service business survives on the small things: care, consistency, and attention.

This is the first episode of Skilled Up, a new series under our Entrepreneurship and Employability Programme (TEEP), where we follow our students as they step outside the classroom and into real industries — and come back changed.

T**i and Aishat are now talking about starting their own business. They’ve even worked out their capital.

This is exactly why TEEP exists — to give children from low-income communities a real pathway out of poverty, through skill and enterprise, not just academics.

150 more children are joining Talent Mine Academy this September, and we want every one of them to have access to experiences like this.

The team hangout finally left the group chat.

And that’s how you know the Talent Mine Academy team was somewhere good.

We spent a day at Ndubusi Park, Lagos, Nigeria. No laptops, no to-do lists — just the team choosing to be children again for a few hours.

We played every game on offer, laughed with tears rolling down our faces, ate well, and just unwound.

Behind every child we support, there’s a team that also needs room to rest, connect, and recharge. This was ours.

Now we want another one. December feels right 👀

Dr. Roti Balogun, one of our founding board members, visited us recently — and what stayed with him most was the people.

He saw a rare kind of dedication in every staff member — resilience, commitment, and a real sense of mission about raising future leaders and making sure every child gets what they need to become problem solvers who rise out of poverty. Rofiat was seven years old when poverty tried to write her story for her.

❌ No access to quality education.
❌ No structured path forward.

Just a child full of potential, with no income to develop it.

Today, Rofiat is graduating from Primary 6 into JSS1 — and every step of that journey was carried by resources most children never have to think twice about:

▫️Safe transportation to and from school
▫️Life skills that shape character, and
▫️Entrepreneurship training that paves a pathway out of poverty

This is what access to education at Talent Mine Academy really looks like — not just a classroom, but everything a child needs to actually thrive in it.

In 2019, a group of children showed up to a weekly Saturday lesson with nothing but curiosity.

Last week, we watched them graduate from primary school — on their way to secondary — at our Prize Giving Day.

Free education and excellent education aren’t a trade-off at Talent Mine Academy. They’re the same commitment.

Watching our early childhood class graduate is a different kind of proud.

We remember the first day tears. The first ABCs. The first time they counted to ten without help. And now—here they are, stepping into a whole new chapter.

Our second Prize Giving Day just wrapped—and it was the kind of day that reminds us why our work matters.

Yesterday, Talent Mine Academy held its graduation ceremony for Early Childhood and Primary 5/6, paired with our annual Prize Giving Day.

Every parent in attendance. Every student present. Cultural performances from Yoruba and Igbo traditions, choreography from our own students, graduation speeches, and awards for both staff and learners who pushed through a transformative session.

It was a full-circle moment—watching a session’s worth of growth land on one stage in one afternoon. None of it would exist without the community behind it: the donors matched with individual students, the partners funding daily meals, the sponsors building the classrooms these children will walk into this September, and everyone giving toward the day-to-day running of the school.

To every one of you—thank you. This milestone belongs to you as much as it does to the children who earned it.
