In our admission files, one sentence keeps repeating.
The mother used to sell something.

During our selection process, we document the story of every family that applies. This year, the same pattern appeared again and again.

❌ The mother used to sell pap, but the business closed for lack of finance.
❌ Another used to manufacture nylon herself until her equipment was stolen.
❌ A father sold drinks in a small shop before the business ran down.

The data behind these stories:
→ 15% of children have a parent who is ill, disabled, blind, or post-stroke.
→ 20% have lost a parent to death.

That tells the real story. These families were not always poor. A death. An illness. A broken leg. A burglary. Lost sight. One shock, no safety net, and within two terms, a child was out of school.

For families without savings, insurance, or social support, one event is enough to undo everything. And education is often the first casualty.

Because TMA is free, a family’s worst year does not have to become a child’s last year in school. But we can only hold as many children as our classrooms allow.

There is a quiet assumption in development work that parents living in low-income homes do not value education.

At Talent Mine Academy, we decided to test it.

During our selection process, our team scores every parent and every child on willingness.
The data revealed:
→ 70% of parents scored full marks on willingness.
→ 44 children rated their own willingness 10 out of 10.
→ 28 children scored 9 or 10 on willingness and still came in under 30% on the test.

That third number tells the real story. High willingness. Low scores.
The gap is not motivation. It is access to consistent schooling, to learning support, and to a classroom built for them.

The demand is there. What is missing is the space to say yes to them.
So we are building it.

The average household income of a child at TMA is ₦23,000 a month.

That’s a deep financial constraint, one that makes education a luxury for many families. It’s why over 18 million Nigerian children are out of school.

During our just-concluded selection process, we discovered this is just one of the many sad limitations keeping children from quality education.

We sat with 360 children.
Learned about them.
Visited their homes.

What we discovered has been overwhelming, to say the least.

Talent Mine Academy is looking for an Entrepreneurship & Employability Program Manager to run TEEP — our program where students turn skills like fashion design, bead making, and crocheting into real businesses.

This is a hands-on, on-campus role in Ota, Ogun State. You’ll own everything from training cycles and vendor budgets to getting student-made products in front of real buyers.

Investing in teachers is investing in outcomes for children.

Last week, Talent Mine Academy partnered with The STEAM Innovation Foundation to train our learning guides in STEM, with a focus on 3D design and product design.

This is intentional. At TMA, we are raising problem solvers, not just knowledge holders. Our students need to see how concepts apply in the real world and build solutions from them. That requires learning guides equipped to teach that way.

We’re looking forward to seeing our students apply these tools directly—designing real solutions to real problems.

None of this is possible without the people and organizations who invest in children from low-income communities.

Should summer break raise entrepreneurs?
This summer, ours did.

While most children were on holiday, ours were in school—not for academic rigour, but for something we believe matters just as much: giving them the skills to rise out of poverty.

All summer, our students were learning skills that will stay with them for a long time.

Through our summer entrepreneurship and employability programme, children were:
🧵 Learning fashion designing and crocheting
📿 Making beads — and producing pieces they can actually sell
🔬 Building in our STEM track — thinking critically, creating solutions
🏫 Interning — both within the school and in real organisations outside it

This is what we mean when we say TMA is not just a school. We are building the next generation of problem-solvers and entrepreneurs.

Before a child is enrolled at Talent Mine Academy, our staff have already been to their home. Not once — three times.

At our free school, enrollment doesn’t start with a form — it starts with a process.

Registration of interest, an entrance exam, an interview, and then a three-stage home verification carried out by our own staff.

We’re assessing a child’s willingness to learn, a parent’s commitment to their education, and a verified, honest picture of the family’s financial need.

This process has run for over 3 years, and it’s why more than 60 donors have trusted us to pair their sponsorship directly with a specific child — because they know precisely who they’re supporting and why.
